Sitting Is Killing You

Today’s tip for healthy broke people!!!

I’m sure if you are on a budget you are well-aware of the concept of buying in bulk. But cooking in bulk helps too!!! The times when we are most likely to settle for unhealthy food? When we are out of time!!! Many factors lead to that cooking for yourself tends to be healthier than eating prepackaged stuff. But seeing as honesty is one of my policies on this blog, imma just go ahead and say that that is a pain in my ass. I do like cooking, but it takes time and I don’t feel like taking that time and using all those dishes every time I want a meal. SO! I plan ahead. When I cook, I cook a lot of food. Like, 4-5 meals worth. But I don’t eat 4-5 meals worth. When you do this, know that you are cooking for that many meals, which will help you to still keep your serving size down, cause you will know that you have to make it last. Plus, I personally super enjoy leftovers, so the fact that I get a quick easy leftover meal for several meals in a row is awesome to me.

I will repeat though: stay aware and plan out that what you are cooking is for eating at specific times and has to last you until your next planned cooking day.

I have, all of my life, been a supporter of Autism Awareness and have campaigned to ensure that people with Autism are both cared for and assisted in their lives. My brother has severe Autistic Spectrum Disorder and he regularly goes to weekend or two day respite centres in order to allow both himself and the family a break from the constant pressures living with his condition causes. I won’t lie and say living with autism in your life is easy; sometimes the pressure becomes overwhelming; which is why respite centres are an important resource for those affected.

The BBC’s Panorama programme recently did an investigation into an adult care centre, which is residential, called Winterbourne View. There people with learning disabilties, including Autism, stay in what is supposed to be safe, caring and enriching environment where happy lives can be led with support contstantly available.

That is not the case in Winterbourne View.

Patients there are treated as less than human; no more than a source of entertainment to be bullied, abused and tortured by their carers. Some care workers have no experience in the field they are supposed to be working in and use force at every opportunity in order to make patients bend to their whims. In the Panorama investigation care workers and health care nurses on call all either take part in, or sit back and watch, systematic and brutal assaults that occur on vulnerable patients. Many are slapped, punched or pinned to the floor. One girl was covered in several jugs of water and left outside in freezing temperatures until she was shivering uncontrollably. Another was dragged out of bed and pinned to the floor until she became hysterical.

Whilst watching the terrible things which happened there I found myself in tears over the people who were suffering. My brother could easily have been one of them; who knows what happens in residential care homes? That’s the thing -you’re supposed to know. What’s supposed to happen is that the patient is cared for at the highest level. It’s as simple as that. Yet there was no care, nor compassion, shown at Winterbourne View. There was no humanity there.

The system has failed these people; people who suffer from illnesses which hamper their lives. They have experienced enough difficulty already - to allow them to be treated worse than animals, worse than nothing…is a breach of trust, a breach of care and a breach of human rights. What is worse is that someone reported the bullying, abuse and ill treatment which goes on at Winterbourne View before the Panorama report was filmed. Nothing was done at that time to remove the abusers and the victims continued to suffer.

For me the moment where the girl being showered in freezing water, simultaneously having shower gel and mouthwash tipped over head, called out for her mother hit me hard. I imagined my brother in a place like that; being abused and ignored and hurting. People with Autism are people; vulnerable people who need the support of their carers when entrusted into care. What is more - the families of people with Autism need the assurance that they are sending their loved ones somewhere safe. I cannot imagine the pain the families of the victims must be experiencing at seeing the terrible things being done at Winterbourne View. I know if my brother had been one of the victims I would be murderous.

Yet still I’m angry. Angry that such a thing went on for so long without check. Angry that inspections were done and nothing changed. Reports were filed, complaints made…and nothing changed. God knows how many other places like Winterbourne View are out there. But I know one thing for certain; the abusers of those they were supposed to care for deserve prison sentences. They deserve punishment for what they’ve done; as well as the companies which stood by and did nothing to stop the violence occurring. The fact that their identities are, to some extent, being protected and their interests minded appalls me. They offered those in their care no dignity - in my eyes they deserve none now.

I don’t think I will never be confident my brother is safe when away from home ever again.

What’s your excuse for not being fit?

Sixteen people are dead and more than 1,000 are ill after becoming infected by a, still unknown, source of E. Coli. Experts say they’ve never seen anything like it and are frantically trying to determine the origin of the contamination. In its most dangerous form, the infection can attack the kidneys, sometime causing strokes, seizures and comas.

What is it about exercising that as soon as we begin we want to give up? Is it our body just saying is getting tired or is our mind starting to play game with us? One thing i know is that sitting here complaining, wishing that i could finally be fit will not fix anything. We have to do it for ourselves but one thing we have to realize is that wishing does not work. Cause at the end we are the ones responsible for eating too much, too lazy, just too uninspired to do things. We could have the greatest trainer but if we don’t change our attitude nothing will change. No one will lose the weight for us so is time to get up from our butts and start making our own path towards a healthier lifestyle.

From Roger Doiron, founder and weeder-in-chief of kitchengardeners.org

here’s what he says about this great infographic:

In a nutshell, I was really inspired by the diversity and nutritiousness of the crops planted in the White House kitchen garden this spring and thought it would be eye-opening - not to mention jaw-dropping - to see what the White House garden would look like if it were planted to reflect the relative importance of the crops that are taxdollars are actually supporting.

You’ll see that there’s very little resemblance between America’s Kitchen Garden and our “Subsidy Garden”

I don’t know how useful this is, but feel free to download it, use it and share it as you wish. The data comes from the Environmental Working Group’s amazingly comprehensive and searchable Farm Subsidy Database: http://farm.ewg.org/

Excellent infographic that everyone should read:
