so my current location is knoxville, tennessee.  it is probably one of the most humid areas in the...

So today was day one of my new workout plan (see my goals for June post) and I think I did pretty good!

Intake:

Breakfast: homemade smoothie (frozen strawberries and peaches, fresh strawberries, a banana and milk; delish!)

Work Snack: an orange, a banana and 1 can of low sodium v8

Pre-workout snack: a bowl of plain 2% yogurt

Lunch: a huge plate of shrimp salad: shrimp tossed in homemade asian vinaigrette (ginger, sesame oil, rice wine vinegar, coriander, chillies, garlic) on top of arugula, spinach, romaine lettuce, red & yellow peppers, cucumber, mushrooms, roma & cherry tomatoes. the salad leaves also came very with small portions of asiago cheese, flax seed crackers, almonds, those crunchy yellow asian noodle-looking thingies, pineapple and tangerines so we threw them in there as well. mmmm soo yummy!

Before school snack: kiwi and a small bowl of special k with red berries and milk

While driving snack (my sister fed me lol): about 6 bites of Sri lankan style lemon rice and spicy potatoes mmm

In-class snack: some blueberries, blackberries, strawberries and cherries

Dinner: dahl (lentil curry) with spareribs on top of rice. Mmmm my mom is an amazing cook.

I also had 2 cups of green tea and some water.

Workout: I did C25K (W1D3) and 30 mins of power yoga which I absolutely love. The only workout which makes me feel energized, relaxed and rejuvenated while I sweat buckets.

So overall I think I did pretty good today, although I definitely need to up my water intake. Other than that, I think I may have gone a little overboard with the fruit; I probably should’ve substituted some of them for veggies. I wonder if it’s bad to have too many fruits in one day (ie too much sugar)? Either way, it’s definitely better than snacking on chips or cookies so I’m not upset about it. Hopefully the rest of the month goes this smoothly!

I watched this on the skinny. I never really thought about it that way. And what she was saying applied to me. I am always like: “If I lose this, then this”. I never realized i did that before I watched that video.

I’m now thinking that if you don’t love your self and are only healthy because you want to lose weight… you are going to get no where. It’s about a healthy life style. I still haven’t really grasped that but… I believe I am getting there.

Well, maybe not healthy…but pretty low in calorie, and many of these are low in fat, too! It’s so easy to get rid of that sweet tooth with all of these yummy recipes. When I looked them up, I was like…are you forreal? 150 calories!? Chocolate? Sweetness? HELLS YEAH

Another from the Allergies and Asthma health section to accompany a story about bronchial thermoplasty, a practice being performed at OSU.

How else am I supposed to feel?

Ever since I had that PAT attack, i’m pretty much easily breakable.

I just found out i’ll be on a heart monitor for three weeks, starting Thursday.

Was on one for 24 hours, hated ever second, so three weeks should be fun.

Miss Violet Beauregarde vs Miss Como Mango…see any resemblance? :P

Courtesy of Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory:

VIOLET: What’s happening?
MR. BEAUREGARDE: You’re blowing up like a balloon!
WONKA: Like a blueberry.
MR. BEAUREGARDE: Somebody do something!  Call a doctor!
MRS. TEEVEE: Stick her with a pin.
CHARLIE: She’ll pop!
WONKA: It happens every time!  They all become blueberries.
MR. BEAUREGARDE: You’ve really done it this time, haven’t
you, Wonka.  I’ll break you for this.
WONKA: Oh, well, I’ll get it right in the end.
VIOLET: Help!  Help!
     (Wonka plays the pipe whistle.)
MR. BEAUREGARDE: We’ve got to let the air out of her, quick!
WONKA: There’s no air in there.
MR. BEAUREGARDE: Hmm?
WONKA: That’s juice.
MR. BEAUREGARDE: Juice?!?
WONKA: (to an Oompa Loompa) Would you roll the young lady
down to the juicing room at once, please.
MR. BEAUREGARDE: What for?
WONKA: For squeezing.  She has to be squeezed immediately
before she explodes.
MR. BEAUREGARDE: Explodes?!?
WONKA: It’s a fairly simple operation.

I’m full of blueberry juice. P90X and healthy eating = my operation.

Getting a healthy summer glow doesn’t take much, so to beat off the summer rays and keep the skin glowing, good skincare essentials are a must before you step out the house.

Diseases that cause breathing difficulties. http://dld.bz/pYCF health

i really don’t like girls with majorly skinny legs. Dancers are sexy, Beyonce is sexy, Nicole from the pussy cat dolls is sexy, and they all have thick thighs. Having ‘a gap between your thighs’ shouldn’t be a trend. Being healthy is the way to go.

3 days till my first road race!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I saw the medals and they’re sooo awesome!

It’s not really on my meal plan but it’s not what I intended to cut out when I started my FVP challenge so I don’t see it as a failure. I wanna cut out bread, pasta and sugar mostly for these 28 days but after that cereal I can see just how wheat makes you hungrier than you were before. No wonder I was binge eating.

How Your Meat Eating Can Kill Vegetarians:

“Factory farming produces hundreds of millions of tons of animal poop, millions of gallons of which gets dumped into cesspools that can then leak and infect water used to irrigate crops. That’s how E. coli, an intestinal pathogen found both in cows and humans, can spoil things like cucumbers and spinach.

Maybe you eat meat, and believe that it is no one’s business. Maybe you are a vegan, and prefer to not step on anyone’s toes at the dinner table. But the truth is, people who choose to eat meat from factory farms effect us all. And the effect is negative. This article is a great, although frustrating, read.

Album of the day #11- HEALTH- Get Color

Reasons I love it: HEALTH are something of an acquired taste, with constant noisey electro, buried vocals, frantic drumming and a frankly terrifying Twitter account. The band use a studio album-remix album-studio album release formula and to date have released two remix albums just as good as the original efforts. But Get Color is still their best output to date, jarring pedal screeches and squeals accompanied by thundering percussion and their signature haunting singing, it’s a tough album to get through but when you get past all the noise it’s bloody good.

Favourite Track: Die Slow

Best Lyric: “Our bones won’t grow in the dirt”- We Are Water

For fans of: Crystal Castles, Nine Inch Nails, Skinny Puppy

Todays run was at the doggie beach… Took it all the way...

Public Health Issues:

Know about health issues, information and solution

This is me at 100 pounds. I don’t take mirror shots often .

Yay!

We went shopping, and although all the roommates’ stuff came out to $12 each, i bought another $15 of my own for healthy choices. Tomatoes, lettuce, strawberries, bagels, whole wheat bread, and so on. :)

So I made this salad for dinner! It has a ton of lettuce, half a tomato, fried chicken filet, cheese, onions and italian dressing. :D

don’t watch this.

Anyone ever had this? I tried it for the first time this past week. Mixed it in with my water (that cup  right thurr). It didn’t taste like anything but the little seeds became soft which made for an unpleasant texture. The label suggests using this on salads and other foods. I could see mixing this in with a smoothie.

I will start off with this, since it was my inspiration for making this blog in the first place!

I encourage all to watch it on your spare time. It truly is life changing!

Todays run was at the doggie beach… Took it all the way down to huntington beach pier down the pier then back… Felt really good… small bouts of dehydration but had a hydration bottle…

Dr. Oz Highlights the Importance of Following Bowel Preparation Instructions Before Colonoscopy

IS MEDICARE ABOUT TO RUN OUT?

I know I whine a lot and it frequently comes off as high-horse but it isn’t intended and most of the time is genuinely confused so bear with me. When my mother came to visit with us a few months ago, she was here for a week. When we went to Whole Foods to get dinner and any groceries she might need, she bought herself dinner and a mango that looked yummy. Michael’s sister is here for a week. Thus far, we’re looking at $46 on food. I just don’t understand that.

I know plenty of people have the money to do - that’s cool. But I just don’t get how you spend $46 on things that don’t combine to form a meal. Of course, I know what Michael and his family considers a meal is vastly different from how I was raised so that might be one of the differences right there.

This one isn’t about my family or Michael’s, however. This one is about being confused as to how people eat certain ways. Let’s face it, we’ve all eaten crappy before in ours lives. Everyone has had that week they said fuck it to anything but cheese fries, that semester of binge drinking or chain smoking (or both!), that buffet line that got the best of them. No human being (even those who BS well) can say they always eat healthy or even close to it everyday in their life. I’m pretty darn close nowadays but sometimes get taken hold of by the Too Much Popcorn Monster.

I just don’t get how one could choose to eat really, really poorly and really, really expensive everyday. Surely someone has mentioned to you that Doritios are not a healthy snack or lunch. Surely someone has told you or you’ve read it somewhere that there is this thing called “sodium” and that having 5,000mg+ of it in a day is bad. I know so many people who turn a blind eye to this crap and yes, it’s fine once in a while but let’s not pretend that eating like crap daily every meal daily doesn’t catch up with someone.

I don’t know, maybe I’m on edge and looking forward to a healthy life or something.

The Truth About Cellulite

i love feeling sweat beads trickle down my face after a good run

Honest to goodness, I needed serious motivation on this Monday morning to get up & go to the gym. I ended up sleeping past my alarm (read: my normal morning routine) and was severely discouraged when I realized I had like 15 minutes to get my butt out of the house if I wanted to work out before work.

In my groggy half-sleep state I seriously almost didn’t get up. Then I read a text on my phone from my friend Natalie who confirmed that we were getting together tonight. I was not going to have time to work out after work. Bummer.

Still, I wasn’t convinced (still not completely awake) that I should, in fact, get up today. Then I remembered something. I remembered that last night I had put some old episodes I hadn’t seen of Doctor Who on my iPhone just so I could watch it at the gym. Score. Motivation = ? Done. Hey, whatever works, right?

Sprang up out of bed, shouted to Mom was downstairs to ask her to brew me a cup of coffee, and did my “I don’t have to look good, I’m just going to the gym” quick get-ready routine. Which literally, by the way, just consists of getting my hair out of my face, brushing my teeth, putting contacts in, and putting on a clean set of gym clothes.

Ran downstairs, grabbed a thermos of coffee, a bowl of cereal (which I ate on the road, eep.) and sprinted out the door. I really, really don’t like having a rushed morning but as soon as I was on my way to my work out, I felt better about it.

At the gym I did a little bit of weights then elliptical-ed away to Doctor Who ( I watched Series 2, episode 3, if you’re wondering)! It was SO awesome. I was sweating and pushing myself but I was not bored in the least. Though, I do think that perhaps some people may have been weirded out when, at a few different parts, I giggled, gasped, and got goose bumps. Yes, I am a mega-Whovian.

Here’s the break down of what I did at the gym:

Weights:

  • Leg Extension-

110 lb\10 reps\3 sets

  • Hamstring Curls-

60 lb\10 reps\3 sets

  • Calf Raises-

60 lb\10 reps\3 sets

  • Chest Press (on an Inclined bench)

12 lb\10 reps\3 sets

  • Chest Fly (on an inclined bench)

12 lb\10 reps\3 sets

  • Bent-over Rows with Triceps Kickback

8 lb\10 reps\3 sets

Then I hit up the elliptical for 45 minutes with intervals of Crossramp 6 Resistance  and Crossramp 10 Resistance 10.

Ta-da!

In other news, I do think I am going to try out posting photos of all of my meals + snacks in here. I want to start using this as a food journal, of sorts. I hope this will help hold me accountable for my choices and also to help me sort out if I really am hungry for the things I want to eat. So I apologize in advance if my meals are super boring.

Good night!

I have some bah news. Day 6 of the 30 Day Shred did not happen for me. I had school on Sunday, walked home (about 2km) and had to pack up to go see my mom so I could work a shift in my home town. My shift was from 5am-2pm so I chose sleep over exercise.

Today has been very hard everything-wise. I have a test tomorrow that I have yet to study for and I’m super exhausted from my dumb shift at work. I did manage to do Day 7 and guess what?! I have an injury. My left knee is messed up and whenever I put pressure on it it feels like needles. However, I kept on goin’ - probably not a good idea in the long run. I did the 30 day shred plus some modified versions of different cardio moves that I know so that I don’t get bored. I guess I burned maybe 200 cals? plus standing for 9 hours today….how many calories does that burn? and does that even count? Probably not.

Now, let me tell you problem #2. My wonderful mother brought me Arby’s for dinner yesterday and made me feel guilty if I didn’t eat it. So I did. I should also mention that I have celiac disease. I can’t eat gluten without getting sick. My family thinks its okay for me to have it once in a while because they have witnessed me eat bread, etc. (Although its very rare). So, to make a long story short: sick to my stomach. Ugh. Sucks!!!

Plus, I think Boston is winning…dammit.

Other than that, I have been trying to eat well. Although, I’m not seeing much of a difference. In fact, I feel fatter than before. I went to the mall and I felt like a whale. Maybe I’m retaining water? Well, I feel even less sexy than I did before and I’m not sure why. I don’t want to give up though. I’m just scared of keeping it up and achieving nothing…

Oh well. I hope your fitness goals are going better than mine.

Until tomorrow,

-Sandy

Yay!

Your skin is the gateway between your inner and outer worlds and has the power physically to absorb all that it comes in contact with. In this way and others, the largest organ in your body, wields way more power in the fight for overall wellness than you may think.  All day we literally take in all that is around us, including lots of air pollutants.  If you live in the city, this constant barrage can be particularly harsh.

In addition to this many of the products that are available to us in the way of cleansers and soap, are factory made, with harmful additives and the “cleansing” that occurs does more harm than good, stripping your skin of its natural oils and leaving it dry, flaky, or inflamed.  This scenario works in a consumerist society because if soap leaves your skin dry and flaky, then you’ll be forced to buy a moisturizer! But it shouldn’t be this way, there is nothing wrong with your skin there is something wrong with the environs and elements it’s being exposed to.  You shouldn’t have to buy multiple products to do the job of one. Our bodies are programmed not just to survive, but to thrive at their fullest potential.  When given the right tools, your cells have an amazing ability to bounce back.  I think of Three Graces Organics as quite literally the best food you could possible give your skin.  You are feeding the largest organ of your body, the one that exists for the sole purpose of protecting all your internal organs from the dangers of the outside world!  It is so important and so unrecognized in the picture of overall health.

The great power of the skin to absorb all that it comes in contact with is one that can work to your benefit!  By choosing to use soaps and other beauty products that support your skins natural abilities to heal itself, namely those that are all-natural and not overly processed you can give your body the tools it needs to do the best job on your behalf.  Everybody should and can have that healthy glow.

When formulating the recipes for all Three Graces Organics soap, many schools of healing knowledge are considered and synthesized to create natural, nutritive, high-vibrational power bars! Your skin deserves lots of love and life everday, not just when you can afford a trip to the spa.

Why Fibromyalgia Has a Credibility Problem
  • Trigger warning: Discussion of depression, death.
  • Note: This is a long and winding road post. Also, I’m from Canada, and my story is rooted in that locale, with all its attendant privileges, cultural and economic.

I live with my parents. It’s increasingly common for people in their twenties, and even their thirties to stay at home longer, or to return to the nest after living alone. So what happens when your parents get older? I’ve had the experience of taking care of my parents, though not through old age. Caring for them was rewarding, because it really meant taking care of each other. It was also challenging.

When I was in my second year of university, and just starting to think about saving for my own place, my mother’s knee and hip problems were officially declared a disability. She was given a cane, put on the waiting list for surgery, given a modified exercise regimen and so many pills. She was in pain every day, sometimes all day.

Months later, my father was struck by a car while riding his bike to work. After the ICU there were weeks in a hospital bed, and then months of recovery at home. He was instantly retired—declared unfit to work ever again. This, I should point out here, is not quite the case. He has issues with memory and concentration, infrequent bouts of debilitating vertigo, and his temper is worse, but faced with early retirement, he pursued recovery relentlessly and eventually went back to school for a French studies degree.

With all this going down, I exchanged my job for a more flexible one, and threw myself into taking care of my family. Later, with my dad slowly recovering and increasingly independent, and my having taken over the burden of household chores from my mother, I had my second bout of major depression. After a solid year of suicidal ideation, general misanthropy and paranoia, I moved into a year of shaky recovery. I dropped out of school. I took up yoga and running and changed my diet. I did cognitive behavioural therapy and even tried giving up caffeine. It was years before I even considered going back to school. I’d left it in a mess and had lingering anxieties associated with class, matters bureaucratic and talking about my problems—probably that was the worst.

While I did the laundry, cooking, shopping and took my parents to doctor’s appointments, they took care of me in turn. They checked up on me—was I sleeping? Eating right? Getting exercise and sunlight? These things matter. When you’re dealing with depression, they matter a lot.

Our relationship wasn’t without difficulty. It’s hard to live with your parents in your early twenties. You want so much to be your own person; demonstrate your entirely grownup independence. It’s hard too, to help your father to the bath. Help your mother off the toilet. But not so hard as all that—probably not so hard as being taken care of by your daughter, so many years before you expected to need that kind of help. There was a lot of tension in the house, not least because we were all in pain, but slowly things got better.

These days we’re in a comfortable state of cohabitation. We split the bills and the housework—post surgery, my mother is far more able to do the sort of every day chores that used to wipe her out completely—and we’re all preparing to make another set of changes in our lives. My mother can now take the stairs without trouble, though problems with her right hip suggest another surgery may be in order, and it seems that arthritis is something to watch for. But she’ll be retiring in two years, and she’s got plans and determination. Now years after the accident, my father is studying at University of Toronto, and volunteering at a school part time. He’ll never work full time again—a half day is enough for him—but he’s busy and intellectually challenged. I finally went back to school. I’m slowly easing my way into grad school, and the gods willing, developing a career as a writer.

Between one thing and another, I never did leave home permanently. It wasn’t economical, but more importantly, it wasn’t the right thing for my family. These days, I’m thinking about it again, looking at my budget and options all over the city, but—let’s be honest—preferably close to my parents. I’m thinking about a career and about having kids. It’s a strange to find myself on this particular cliff, quite a few years late.

My parents are in their sixties and I’m in my late twenties. Perhaps too early to worry about what will happen twenty or thirty years from now, but having that experience, and having so recently seen the older generation of our family through old age and death, it’s on all our minds. I wonder sometimes what it would be like if we stayed together, and saw each other through the next stage of our lives. Or if I bought a house, and they moved into my home when the time for it came. I think about it a lot, and they do too.

My grandparents’ generation left a mark on us—my grandfather, who died alone but at home; my grandmother who died in a long term care facility, miserable and poorly cared for. Their successes and failures; our successes and failures. The difficulties that elders face in homes, nursing homes, hospitals and everywhere in public are on our minds, because disabled people are faced with similar indignities, frustrations, and abuses.

I wonder a lot about how we millennials will do, when it’s our turn to step up and care for those who cared for us. What happens when ‘failure to launch’ and ‘returning to the nest’ meets retirement, old age, and eventually death? So much will depend on class, race and community. The narratives we’ve been treated to so far are light and airy, white middle class romps through delayed development. It all comes down to clinging too tightly to childhood, it seems. I wonder when we’ll see the stories of people of colour, or working class millenials who simply never broke through that glass ceiling. Stories of rural folks who’ve watched their local economies slow to a trickle, moved back in with their parents, and now must see them through their twilight years—but how? What will government austerity and the decline of the welfare state mean in twenty years? Thirty years?

I don’t meant to suggest that the experiences of my generation are unique, or even that we’ve got it worse than our parents did, or their parents before them. Life is struggle. We’ve been struggling since we slithered out of the primordial muck, and we’ll be struggling right up until our star burns out. But I wonder, and I think that many people close to my age do too. I’d like a better metaphor than battle, but what else can we call the current political climate but class war? And too, a social cold war, where issues of race, sexuality and personhood are played out in some other neighborhood, some other city, some other country, but certainly not in my backyard. We are post racial. Post discriminatory, period. Political correctness is last decade’s problem, and we’re done with all of that, thank you. These days we’ve got to worry about all those pensions that are about to come due.

My family has been everything to me, and I feel strongly that building bonds of family and community should be a priority for us all. Not just as individually, operating as private citizens, but through the state and through local, national and international organizations. I feel strongly too, that we are all of us up to it. So much of what we hear about baby boomers retiring is media panic, I think. The world will not implode because a lot of Westerners are set to retire at once.

I didn’t have a conclusion in mind when I started writing, and I don’t think I’ve quite managed to find one. So I’ll just ask you guys to tell me your stories, if you’d like. Your worries, plans, theories and whatever else you’ve got.

Eating healthy (: Today going strong and same with yesterday.

You(WE) can do it :D

a great face mask for normal skin can be made by combining 1/4 cup of oatmeal with 100% grapefruit juice.

just add enough juice to create a thick paste.

spread the mixture over your face and neck. leave on for 20 minutes, then rinse with warm water, followed by a splash of cool water. use this treatment once a week to help your skin stay balanced and revitalized.

I’ve never cooked fish before, unless you count scallops or...

I’ve never cooked fish before, unless you count scallops or shrimp, but never areal fish with the skin and everything! This was a new and exciting challenge that ended scrumptiously :)

My house is located literally up the street from a ShopRite and all our lives my mother has been buying groceries there. However, recently I have noticed that at this particular establishment things have taken a downhill turn; it all could have started when I noticed garlic in a basket with a sign that read “GARLIC - grown in China.”

So although gas prices are a bit lofty these days I convinced my mom that a trip to Adams Fairacre Farms would be well worth it. We only live about 10 minutes away from this farmers market-like store and even though the prices are a bit higher than what you would find in the super-chains, its a much better option for an incredible selection of produce, meats, and nutritionally stellar foods (being that a great amount of it is local grown, organic, or all-natural).

Because I am (openly) food/nutrition obsessed, I’m also interested in passing my knowledge on to anyone willing to listen. So when my mother expressed that eating healthier and exercising were two of her main goals for this summer of course I jumped at the chance to help her - plus, who will ever listen to random babbling more faithfully than our moms?

When we arrived, a familiar feeling came over me - like a prospector staring into a mine full of diamonds. Immediately we began to fill our cart with these gems - tomatoes off the vine, fresh (non-chinese) garlic, pears, apples, peppers, green beans, portobello mushrooms, and other local grown produce. Then we moved on to the meat and seafood section where a multitude of brilliant cuts awaited us. This is where I discovered my fish. It was the best filet of salmon I believe I’ve ever seen. Knowing just how healthy salmon is and that dinner time was fast approaching I decided to purchase this filet and try grilling it for tonights meal.

After gathering a few more things, it was back to the house. I had so many different meals planned in my head for the coming week - portobello burgers, turkey sausage and peppers, etc. but I tried to focus on what was in my immediate future - the salmon! So how was I to prepare it- plain or with a marinade? Where should I grill it - the stove grill pan or the outdoor grill? Suddenly memories began to flood my head of stories from the experts about salmon not cooking all the way through, sticking to the grill and falling apart. But I couldn’t let that stop me - how bad to could it be, really?

I decided to consult my favorite food pal - foodnetwork.com to read the basic steps about cutting the filet into servings and preparation. Once again I was very pleased and learned everything I needed to know. So after deciding to use a low-calorie teriyaki sauce for the marinade, it was time to get working. I turned on the outside grill and decided to use a grill pan so it wouldn’t be on the direct heat. I threw some olive oil on there and let it heat up. Back inside I laid the filet on a cutting board and sliced 4 even pieces. Then, after making a few slits into each piece, I lightly brushed on the teriyaki sauce and let them sit for a few more minutes while preparing the steamed green beans.

Finally, it was time. I put them on the grill pan, skin-side down first for about 4-6 minutes. During that time frame I started boiling water for a home-made whole wheat/flax seed pasta we also picked up at Adams (great right?!). Now the meal had the three perfect components: Starch, Vegetable, and Protein…YES! ‘Its all coming together’ I thought to myself. Time was flying by and before I know it I was back outside flipping the salmon over meat side down for another 4-6 minutes. When the pasta was done I tossed it with a bit of rosemary olive oil and let it sit while I set the table and poured glasses of water.

It was time to take the salmon off the grill - will it stick!? I held my breath, slipped  a spatula under the largest filet and lifted up - CLEAN! Yes! I took them inside, removed the skin and poured on a bit more of the marinade. Done. A beautiful, healthy, and relatively simple summer dinner. Now all that was left to do was enjoy it with my parents. What a treat! :)

Cheers to a happy and healthy summer!

My Plate

Last week, the USDA unveiled MyPlate, an easy way to help you eat the right portions of the basic food groups. MyPlate replaces te familiar food pyramid chart.

You can use the MyPlate icon as a daily plan for building healthier eating habits. There are no numbers, calorie counts or exchanges. By “eye-balling” the plate, you can see that half of your plate should be fruits and vegetables. Grains grab a larger sare of the side of the plate shared with protein. Dairy is represented in the glass of milk.

Visit ChooseMyPlate.gov for tips and tools to help you build a custom plate and plan. To get the most out of your meal plan, the USDA suggests:

  • Enjoy your food, but eat less.
  • Avoid over-sized portions.
  • Make half your plate fruits and veggies.
  • Make at least half your grains whole grains.
  • Switch to fat-free or low-fat (1 percent) milk.
  • Compare labels and choose foods with less sodium.
  • Drink water instead of sugary juices or sodas.

I am curious as to what you think about this new nutritional blueprint.

Energy Drinks Adults Only

Energy Drinks: Adults Only

Are those vitamin B energy shots good for you?

They are sold at the drug store and have vitamins, so they must be ok right? Well, energy drinks and shots are for occasional use only.

I would not use any of these type of drinks more than once a week. These shots have massive doses of vitamin b combined with caffeine and some times other herbs. They do wake you up but they can have some bad side effects, like the jitters and flushing of the face. Over use of these products can lead to stress of the liver and kidneys. If you are going to use these energy shots and drinks follow the directions carefully.

I recommend some healthier and less  physically stressful ways to get a boost when you  need one. If you are feeling tired more often these days, try some electrolytes. Electrolyte depletion and imbalances can make you feel run down. This can happen after a long work out , or after taking medication. Some good sources of electrolytes are unsweetened coconut water, sugarless sports drinks, and pediatric electrolyte drink found in the baby section of the drug store. You might be surprised at how much better you feel after getting some electrolytes into your system.

A little tea or coffee in the afternoon can be good thing. Too much caffeine is not. More than 6 cups of coffee a day is bad for you in the exact same way that energy drinks are. However coffee and especially green tea have tons on antioxidants. Coffee is said to be a mild antidepressant. Green tea is associated with lower cancer rates.

Try a little yerba mate tea. This tea is the national drink of Argentina. This tea has a natural combination of vitamin B and caffeine. Yerba mate is found at heath food stores and tea shops.

We all have those too busy times when we feel the need for some extra energy. Try to do this naturally and slowly. This will lead to more energy all the time and prevent you from crashing or being left tired from and energy drink or sugar-caffeine crash.

I just made homemade raw vegan protein bars.

Like a boss. My schedule’s gonna be CRAZY this week, and so I am very proud that I finally have protein bars that were a) not expensive, b) raw, c) used only a few ingredients, d) TASTE AMAZING. Or at least the batter tastes amazing. They’re now freezing overnight, and I get to cut them up in the morning! I will post pics and the recipe then, I promise! :D

I’ve had this bento container laying around for a while...

I’ve had this bento container laying around for a while and figured it’s time I use it a bit more often than usual. Since coming back from Vacation I’ve been such a sloth, but yesterday I spent my evening buying groceries, cleaning up and re-organizing my apartment. Life feels a lot better when it’s a bit more organized. I also packed my lunch for the long day at work today.

I brought some green bell peppers and hummus dip, strawberries, blueberries, and Activia yogurt with a Babybel Lite snack. Not picture: a handful of cashews and baby carrots.

I’ve got a concert to attend this evening after work as well so I hope all of this food tides me over. I was almost scared I brought too much, but now I’m thinking I didn’t bring enough! Today is a busy day, and I just realized that I haven’t eaten any meat in the last couple days! An accidental vegetarian these last few days, and I feel okay with that.

I also donated blood today and ate a nutrigrain bar to curb my hunger afterward. Whenever I donate blood I’m always scared that my iron count will be too low. A few times I’ve been turned away for low iron, and almost rejected for low blood pressure. Thank goodness for multivitamins, because without them I wouldn’t have been able to donate my blood! It’s important for me to give blood because of the sense of satisfaction it provides me. I’ve also learned that I have a rare antigen in my blood, so if anyone needs a transfusion and their antibodies fight off the wrong blood cells, my antigens can help!

On my way to better health!

• Crunchy, chewy mix of flavors with honey-roasted almonds, cranberries, and sesame seeds.
• Almonds are packed with good-for-your-heart fats and antioxidant-rich vitamin E, while sesame seeds provide a good source of vitamin B1.
• All natural, cholesterol free, with no trans fats.
• Each 1.06-ounce serving has: 150 calories, 11 g fat, 7 g sugar, 4 g protein, and 3 g fiber.“Having an intelligent snack within reach, like these all-natural almond clusters, will help keep you away from less desirable options from the vending machine or drive-through.”

The Science of Snacking: Morning

Morning Snack:

Nutrient Breakdown: Carbs (40%), Protein (30%), Fat (30%)

Snacking Goal: Boost your energy level and glycogen stores.
Are you at the gym before the crack of dawn? You don’t want to run on empty and risk early fatigue from low blood sugar levels. Research shows that the best way to mitigate that is to eat a small meal rich with carbohydrates that do not spur a spike in blood sugar. Because low-glycemic carbs elicit a lower blood sugar response, they may boost the body’s use of body fat for energy.

Translation: You can burn more fat if you eat muesli with low-fat milk before a morning workout instead of a bowl of cornflakes. For those who don’t work out before breakfast, reserve this snack for midmorning to keep your blood sugar and energy levels up and to maintain your muscle glycogen stores for activity later in the day.

Try:
  • 1 slice whole-grain bread with 1 tbsp natural peanut butter + 1 cup protein-fortified skim milk
  • 1/2 cup whole-grain cereal + 1 cup low-fat milk + 1/2 cup blueberries
  • 1 packet plain oatmeal made with 1 cup low-fat milk + 1/2 cup chopped walnuts

gained a little clarity since this morning

I realized how stupid it was to be freaking out about one pound. If I really am serious about breaking ALL of my bad habits (binging, purging, self-hate), then I need to calm the fuck down and not get trapped in a cycle of frustration related to my weight.

Old me would freak out, try and restrict my way to more weight loss, and inevitably feel horribly deprived and sad and go to Sonic to inhale a milkshake and then throw it up in the parking lot (yes that has happened) (yes that was a low point).

New me is going to relax- I enjoyed an egg, a slice of toast, and a few almonds for breakfast (well, lunch.. I got up at 1..) and I have some vegetarian sushi on brown rice to eat for a snack, and then I will completely enjoy the vegetarian kebobs and fruit salad my boyfriend and I are making for dinner. And if I want a beer, I’m going to fucking drink it.

And in a bit I’m going to do some strength training on the Wii fit, some yoga, and go for a bike ride or a walk when it cools down.

That is a really healthy day and it is simply an unhealthy mind that tries to convince me it’s not.
