Yesterday I was stopped by the police for… well that wasn’t really clear, but I got a fine for doing something illegal apparently. Then the police said something you might expect in this part of the world; “You want to settle this?”. What he was asking for was a bribe.

By then I called his bluff, and played along and said; “No, give me the fine. If I’ve done something wrong I should pay for it”.

I’m not sure if this was an expected answer, and I might not have given him this answer if this subject hadn’t been brought up at the midsummer party. Apparently, the police force is really bad paid, and a way to make some more money is to collect bribes. Nevertheless, I wasn’t falling for that.

The Policeman replied; “Do you want me to take you to the police station?” in an angry voice.

Me: “If you think it’s needed”.

The policeman went off, with my drivers license for 5 minutes, came back and said; “This time, warning, now go!”, very upset that he didn’t got his bribe money.

On my way home I was thinking, did I go in to a chicken race with a corrupt policeman? What if he would take me down to the police station? Hmm, probably not, would be hard to collect more bribe money if he would be occupied with me.

The problem of bribing is ubiquitous in most parts of the world, more in some than others. Here’s the creation of a guy in India that was fed up with being forced to pay so many bribes. www.ipaidabribe.com, pretty funny and sad at the same time.

So for now, I’m enjoying freedom.

this is a better shot!

Di Mana Kan Ku Cari Ganti  - Tribute to the late P.Ramlee

By - Aizat, Vince, Atilia, Dayang Nurfaizah, Stacy, Bunkface, Ning Baizura, KRU, Shahir, Azlan, Ella, Jaclyn Victor

***I just came back from a talk on P.Ramlee & they were talking on how awesome his song & lyric, I don’t know why but when they played this song I was touched and cried throughout the song (nasib baik duduk belakang hehehe).

This is the closest translation to his lyric since not every word in Malay can be translated with the meaning as close as the meaning in its original language, but I just feel that I should tell how beautiful this version were made to compliment P.Ramlee’s song. You can wiki more about him and listen to his song via youtube - this is not the original song. The song’s are in Malay language so even though you can’t understand, I don’t think language is a barrier when it comes to music right? Enjoice~:)

***

Hendak ku nangis

(I want to cry)

Tiada berair mata

(But no tears to shed)

Hendak ku senyum

(I want to smile)

Tiada siapa nak teman

(But no friends with me)

Kalaulah nasib

Sudah tersurat

(If its fated)

Begini hebat

(This heavy burden )

Apa nak buat

(What can I do?)

Di mana kan ku cari ganti

(Where can I find another)

Serupa dengan mu

(Like you?)

Tak sanggup ku berpisah

(I can’t bare to be separated)

Dan berhati patah, hidup gelisah

(And heart breaks, living in misery)

Alangkah pedih rasa hati

(Oh how it hurts)

Selama kau pergi

(When you’re gone)

Tinggalkan sendirian

(Leaving me alone)

Tiada berteman dalam kesepian

(All alone in loneliness)

Dunia terang menjadi gelita

(The light of my life turns dark)

Cahaya indah tiada bergema

(Without lights shining through)

Keluhan hatiku membawa derita

(My heart sighs with pain)

Kini kau jua tak kunjung jelma

(And you are no longer here)

Di mana kan ku cari ganti

(Where can I find another)

Mungkinkah di syurga

(Perhaps in heaven?)

Untuk kawan berduka

(For a sad friend)

Menangis bersama, selama-lamanya

(Crying together, forever)

The food has been simply amazing. I love food. I spend most of my money on food. I regret nothing!

Best Meal: Oh my god, impossible to answer. I had a couple excellent meals at Bingo in Koh Tao. Just had some spectacular street food off of Lebuh Chulia here in Georgetown tonight. I can’t remember the name, but this one guesthouse in Khao Sok had stellar curry, as well as chocolate pancakes (Francis and I are obsessed with chocolate pancakes.)

Worst Meal: Hahahaha… We tried a dim sum/hot pot place in MBK mall in Bangkok, had no idea how to order or work the thing, the employees just stood there and offered NO assistance or guidance… It was a mess. And didn’t taste very good. The fact that I don’t like seafood didn’t help.

Weirdest Meal: Chicken feet. Just…bizarre.

Really though, I’ve enjoyed pretty much all Thai food I’ve had. Curry? Chilis? Yes, please!! I’m a little more hesitant with the Chinese and Malay food, but I’m always up for Indian. I would eat samosas for every meal if I could.

But I think I’m getting a little tired of fried everything. I just want a light meal or a fresh salad hahaha. But the fruit stalls are always an excellent backup. Pineapple, wawa (How is this actually spelled?? It’s green, mango-sized, and sort of has the taste and texture of an apple or pear), dragonfruit, mango, starfruit (I got some fresh starfruit juice today—in a bag!!—and it was amazing)… Love it all. I have yet to try durian, but it will happen.

Also, I’m obsessed with the taro bread and cream custard filled bread you can get at the ubiquitous 7-Elevens here. (When I say ubiquitous, I mean you can find one every 100 feet. McDonalds and Starbucks have NOTHING on 7-Eleven here.)

…I shouldn’t make myself hungry like this at 2AM.

Malacca River by T|ng~ on Flickr.

While I was writing all that and waiting for my iPod and camera battery to charge (no outlet in the room, so I can’t let it charge while I sleep), one of the night employees, Raf, started chatting with me.

He’s 45 and originally from India, and has been working here for 10 years. He does this at night, and other business during the day, sleeping from 9-3. He also does cobra massage and palm reading. He offered me a free reading, which ended up being pretty interesting.

Apparently I’m going to have an average lifespan, neither short nor long. According to the single line at my wrist, I’m independent. My loveline is short, so love is not a primary concern for me. My goals and prospects are elsewhere. There’s a lot signifying wealth. The intersection of my business and money lines is strong and apparently I would be successful and prosperous in starting my own business. He was especially taken with a mole on my left hand, and also one under my left eye, both signifying money coming in to me. My health problems are in my neck—he spent a lot of time explaining how I can fix this (1. Exercise, 2. Yoga, 3. Conversation (to release pressure from thinking too much?), 4. Sleeping in the right position, 5. Massage … Bonus: Go to the cinema, hahahaha)

What else… The gaps between my fingers say that I am generous. I’ll have only one child. I’ll be “rich in heart.”

He kept complimenting my laugh and trying to get me to do it again (not hard because I laugh at anything and everything) which was pretty hilarious in itself. He offered a massage to help my neck if I’m ever around here again, since I’m leaving tomorrow. I would totally do it! Overall, a fun, random middle-of-the-night conversation haha.

"Land of Lightning"

"Wau & Gasing"

I never thought that Kelantan would be a unique place until I learned the culture of playing Wau and Gasing Kelantanese are playing still. I wonder how big would be Wau be and also the pattern they’d have. I wish to learn how they play with Wau and also Gasingl This made me think of Malaysia as an unique country that cannot be found in other country. Am I able to bring it back to Kuching?? :P
