Eating healthy tonight!

Breakfast:

Vegetable Omelet (1 Egg)

Lunch:

Fruit Salad

Dinner:

Vegetable Casserole (Small Portion)

Snacks:

After dinner - Tea and Cornbread.

I ate a Cinnamon Roll at Lunch which probably wasn’t the healthiest. I regret it now, but it was delicious.

Exercise:

Swimming for Thirty Minutes

Walked Around Campus

Mini Workout After School

Full Workout After Dinner

You’d think for a newly registered dietitian, I’d have this eating healthy thing down pat, but I’m human and it is a struggle for me, just like it is for most people. That being said, I’m committing to making more of an effort for the next month.

Goals:

  • go booze-free for the next 30 days. my liver will thank me, as will my wallet. hopefully it shouldn’t be as difficult as it sounds as i’ll have to be sober throughout nxne anyways and i don’t have too many other shows lined up other than SCENE and i never really drink that day anyways
  • drink more water. this used to be so easy when i was working, i’d fill and re-fill my water bottle hourly and would end up consuming ~ 2L of water and 1.5L of tea just during the work day. it’s been harder since i’ve been off to keep up the habit but i just have to make it part of my routine. i also need to replace my stainless steel water bottle so i have something to carry with me when i go out.
  • cut out junk food/processed sugar hopefully completely. definitely overindulged in desserts over the two week period that included my birthday and graduation. and that needs to stop. allowed cheats to include frozen yogurt and gelato - but only fruit-based ones (no chocolate) and 100% fruit juice freezies, because let’s be honest, it’s hot out, i need some sort of frozen deliciousness. no baking because i just end up having to eat it all and i can’t handle the sugar.
  • have a salad with lunch and/or dinner. with the hot weather here, salads are definitely making more of a comeback in my meals. have cooked vegetables too. also, snack on cut up vegetables and hummus. pretty much, eat more vegetables. i find it so easy to feast on fruit but veggies have always been harder to consume in the appropriate number of servings for me.
  • give up cheese. i’ve actually stopped buying cheese when grocery shopping so that’s helped a lot. really only have parmegiano on pasta which doesn’t count (because i say it doesn’t count) and when eating out, especially at sky blue sky, but i’ll try to pick cheese-free options as much as possible.
  • go wheat-free. this will definitely be the hardest - i love me my bread. but as long as i try to buy gluten-free from the grocery store, it will really only be sky blue sky sandwiches that will be my cheat. i can live with that. might get harder during nxne when i’ll likely eat out more often, but i’ll try my best.
  • i think that’s all. luckily i gave up caffeine 3 years ago, so don’t have to worry about that.

How can I lose inches off my waist…in a day? :O It just happened so that I’m a 28/29 now :)). I used to be 29-31.

Oh well.

Yummy! How about a nice berries fruit salad today before this...

….but CRUNCH!

Mi nombre is Maria, and I want to be a marathoner. Well, I am kind of being a scary cat about it and want to back out, but part of me feels like if I don’t go through with this.. it will haunt me forever.

I will be running the Bank of America Chicago Marathon in October (omaaaagaaawd 26.2!!!) and I have not yet started training. So that you all could get a little bit of an idea of who I am, or my history of running/being active…lemme tell’yuhh wassap.

  • In the summer of 2008, I lost a good 30(ish) pounds by occasional jogging, improving my ways of eating. I’d say this was awesome and opened my eyes to so many things I was missing out on.
  • Summer of 2009 was a weird pause, and I didn’t gain or loose.
  • Summer of 2010 I dropped another 20 pounds— I began jogging, a lot! I finished my first race ever, the Soldier Field Fleet Feet 10 Miler, and also completed the Chicago Half Marathon.
  • Summer of 2011— so far, I have not dropped more weight.. I tend to lose then gain in winter. It’s tough being an FBI agent, I mean..student/worker. I started on the Insanity workout plan just this week, and plan to keep it. I completed the Shamrock Shuffle (baby race) 5 miles. AND NOW… I will start on my official training on Monday.

I am really excited to be sharing my experience with the public, in case anyone needs some motivation to become active, or if someone has any tips they can share with me. I am also REALLY into nutrition, so I will have healthy recipes up, as well as links and interesting runner’s info. This is the schedule I will be running on, except I will adjust it so my long runs can be Mondays.

Two new drugs extend survival for melanoma patients

Two new drugs extend survival for melanoma patients:

Chicago (CNN)— For the first time, patients with the deadliest form of skin cancer have two new treatment options that prolong survival, according to new research presented at a cancer conference in Chicago on Sunday.

One drug specifically targets a mutated gene that tells a cancer cell to grow, the other boosts a patient’s immune system in the fight against the disease. Both drugs cause tumors to shrink and prolong survival for patients with melanoma that has spread to other parts of the body, but neither is a cure.

“This is an unprecedented time of clinical options — it is truly practice-changing,” said Dr. Lynn Schuchter, who heads the Melanoma Center at the University of Pennsylvania and is not involved with the research.

Mum Gives Her Dying Daughter Ecstasy to Ease Death

Mum Gives Her Dying Daughter Ecstasy to Ease Death :

A mother has told how she gave her dying daughter the illegal drug Ecstasy in order to ease her suffering during the final stages of cancer. She claims the sessions, which combined taking the drug with psychotherapy, were immensely beneficial, enabling her daughter, who had never taken drugs before, to come to terms with her mortality without suffering.

AIDS 30th Anniversary Marks a Cure!

AIDS 30th Anniversary Marks a Cure!:

A cure sounds utterly amazing but that doesn’t mean that current medications and prevention efforts should be halted.  Statistics indicate that newly diagnosed patients have really high life expectancies that are only a mere few months shorter than healthy people who do not have HIV.  We need to continue our hard-work and dedication to this very serious cause.  No disease has a one-size-fit all treatment so we cannot rely on a newly discovered miraculous gene to solve AIDS; especially when we aren’t necessarily willing to dish out the cost.  June 8th, 2011 marks an important date for AIDS.  The United Nations’ General Assembly will be meeting to figure out what should be done next.

My mother recently got in touch with a cardiothoracic surgeon at Stanford Hospital… so that...

My mother recently got in touch with a cardiothoracic surgeon at Stanford Hospital… so that she could be part of a clinical study. From our phone calls, my mom seemed very optimistic about it… but, after looking it up for myself, I seem to be becoming a little more skeptical. I am not quite sure what to think, but I wish I didn’t have class freedays so I could accompany her next week.

Anywho, the idea of medicine can help so many people, yet it is so limited to who can reach out to it. Hospital bills of tens of thousands of dollars prevent so many people from getting treatment that can really help change their lives.

Such a heartbreak to see those who are ill. Hits such a close spot to home.

I think people can use a little more compassion and care when it comes to health, because it’s something so taken for granted… by literally everyone in the world. When it’s gone, you really can’t get it back. And I’m not talking about a common cold or a bed-ridden flu, I’m talking about the major hitters.

We can talk so much about working so hard to push ourselves, our kids, our loved ones to be successful… but all the success, money, love in the world can’t replace the value of good health.

When our health goes, everything leaves with it. And I think it’s often something people don’t really think of and don’t really cherish. People around you will often (self)-note how envious they are of others’ wealth, others’ careers, others’ success… but you’ll never hear them make any remarks towards the envy of one’s health… But being healthy, being physically able to do things is so important & so life-changing that it makes a bigger difference than the idea of monetary goods and social status. You can’t really buy back the memories, the relationships that could have been created with the idea of good health. Its value is not only held by the one person being affected, but it is cherished with everyone around him/her. Just something we should keep in mind from time to time.

Meh, just a few late night thoughts…
