Sitting Is Killing You

Today’s tip for healthy broke people!!!

I’m sure if you are on a budget you are well-aware of the concept of buying in bulk. But cooking in bulk helps too!!! The times when we are most likely to settle for unhealthy food? When we are out of time!!! Many factors lead to that cooking for yourself tends to be healthier than eating prepackaged stuff. But seeing as honesty is one of my policies on this blog, imma just go ahead and say that that is a pain in my ass. I do like cooking, but it takes time and I don’t feel like taking that time and using all those dishes every time I want a meal. SO! I plan ahead. When I cook, I cook a lot of food. Like, 4-5 meals worth. But I don’t eat 4-5 meals worth. When you do this, know that you are cooking for that many meals, which will help you to still keep your serving size down, cause you will know that you have to make it last. Plus, I personally super enjoy leftovers, so the fact that I get a quick easy leftover meal for several meals in a row is awesome to me.

I will repeat though: stay aware and plan out that what you are cooking is for eating at specific times and has to last you until your next planned cooking day.

I have, all of my life, been a supporter of Autism Awareness and have campaigned to ensure that people with Autism are both cared for and assisted in their lives. My brother has severe Autistic Spectrum Disorder and he regularly goes to weekend or two day respite centres in order to allow both himself and the family a break from the constant pressures living with his condition causes. I won’t lie and say living with autism in your life is easy; sometimes the pressure becomes overwhelming; which is why respite centres are an important resource for those affected.

The BBC’s Panorama programme recently did an investigation into an adult care centre, which is residential, called Winterbourne View. There people with learning disabilties, including Autism, stay in what is supposed to be safe, caring and enriching environment where happy lives can be led with support contstantly available.

That is not the case in Winterbourne View.

Patients there are treated as less than human; no more than a source of entertainment to be bullied, abused and tortured by their carers. Some care workers have no experience in the field they are supposed to be working in and use force at every opportunity in order to make patients bend to their whims. In the Panorama investigation care workers and health care nurses on call all either take part in, or sit back and watch, systematic and brutal assaults that occur on vulnerable patients. Many are slapped, punched or pinned to the floor. One girl was covered in several jugs of water and left outside in freezing temperatures until she was shivering uncontrollably. Another was dragged out of bed and pinned to the floor until she became hysterical.

Whilst watching the terrible things which happened there I found myself in tears over the people who were suffering. My brother could easily have been one of them; who knows what happens in residential care homes? That’s the thing -you’re supposed to know. What’s supposed to happen is that the patient is cared for at the highest level. It’s as simple as that. Yet there was no care, nor compassion, shown at Winterbourne View. There was no humanity there.

The system has failed these people; people who suffer from illnesses which hamper their lives. They have experienced enough difficulty already - to allow them to be treated worse than animals, worse than nothing…is a breach of trust, a breach of care and a breach of human rights. What is worse is that someone reported the bullying, abuse and ill treatment which goes on at Winterbourne View before the Panorama report was filmed. Nothing was done at that time to remove the abusers and the victims continued to suffer.

For me the moment where the girl being showered in freezing water, simultaneously having shower gel and mouthwash tipped over head, called out for her mother hit me hard. I imagined my brother in a place like that; being abused and ignored and hurting. People with Autism are people; vulnerable people who need the support of their carers when entrusted into care. What is more - the families of people with Autism need the assurance that they are sending their loved ones somewhere safe. I cannot imagine the pain the families of the victims must be experiencing at seeing the terrible things being done at Winterbourne View. I know if my brother had been one of the victims I would be murderous.

Yet still I’m angry. Angry that such a thing went on for so long without check. Angry that inspections were done and nothing changed. Reports were filed, complaints made…and nothing changed. God knows how many other places like Winterbourne View are out there. But I know one thing for certain; the abusers of those they were supposed to care for deserve prison sentences. They deserve punishment for what they’ve done; as well as the companies which stood by and did nothing to stop the violence occurring. The fact that their identities are, to some extent, being protected and their interests minded appalls me. They offered those in their care no dignity - in my eyes they deserve none now.

I don’t think I will never be confident my brother is safe when away from home ever again.

Sixteen people are dead and more than 1,000 are ill after becoming infected by a, still unknown, source of E. Coli. Experts say they’ve never seen anything like it and are frantically trying to determine the origin of the contamination. In its most dangerous form, the infection can attack the kidneys, sometime causing strokes, seizures and comas.

Health Benefits From Oranges http://bit.ly/apxUQQ oranges health

What is it about exercising that as soon as we begin we want to give up? Is it our body just saying is getting tired or is our mind starting to play game with us? One thing i know is that sitting here complaining, wishing that i could finally be fit will not fix anything. We have to do it for ourselves but one thing we have to realize is that wishing does not work. Cause at the end we are the ones responsible for eating too much, too lazy, just too uninspired to do things. We could have the greatest trainer but if we don’t change our attitude nothing will change. No one will lose the weight for us so is time to get up from our butts and start making our own path towards a healthier lifestyle.

From Roger Doiron, founder and weeder-in-chief of kitchengardeners.org

here’s what he says about this great infographic:

In a nutshell, I was really inspired by the diversity and nutritiousness of the crops planted in the White House kitchen garden this spring and thought it would be eye-opening - not to mention jaw-dropping - to see what the White House garden would look like if it were planted to reflect the relative importance of the crops that are taxdollars are actually supporting.

You’ll see that there’s very little resemblance between America’s Kitchen Garden and our “Subsidy Garden”

I don’t know how useful this is, but feel free to download it, use it and share it as you wish. The data comes from the Environmental Working Group’s amazingly comprehensive and searchable Farm Subsidy Database: http://farm.ewg.org/

You can make your run easier by breathing correctly! Use the ratio 3:2 for jogging. This means inhaling for 3 steps and exhaling for 2- this regulates the amount of oxygen in your blood which further enables your muscles. For a quicker running pace, use the ratio 2:1 inhale/exhale. :)

Sharon Begley breaks down whether cell phones really present a cancer risk, following the new WHO report:

The suggestive but ambiguous, even contradictory, evidence that cell phones increase the risk of brain cancer is why the IARC panel put cell phones in the “possibly” category when it comes to cancer risks, a category that also includes pickled vegetables, coffee, DDT, the flame retardant PBB, moth balls, dioxin, and saccharin—in other words, an eclectic collection of hundreds of natural and manmade agents that evoke public reactions from “keep that away from me!” to “oh, come on.”

But how much do we need to worry about this considering our cell talk peaked in 2007 and talk time has been declining since then?

YOU WILL LOVE EACH OTHER

A little late on this update, but yesterday went well, at least in the actual training area. Worked out for an hour; 40min of HIIT, 10min of stairs, and 10 of stretching/walking it out. Today I am finally recovered enough from my first training session with Jennifer to even attempt wanting to lift on my own, and I definitely have to after what I ate yesterday; Hibachi and sushi, you are my diet enemy número uno. Granted, I didn’t eat anything but 1oz of hard cheese, a grapefruit, and one of my protein shakes before dinner, and then nothing after, but that was still enough calories and fats to ruin most of my hard work these last few days. Not stressing though. I’m getting better at saying no to old eating habits and realizing my cravings are only there because my body is going through sugar and carb withdrawals. Honestly, making the gym my number one priority is going to be the hardest part. Contemplating spending the extra $150 or so to start seeing my PT 3 times a week instead of 2.

Eating healthy tonight!

Breakfast:

Vegetable Omelet (1 Egg)

Lunch:

Fruit Salad

Dinner:

Vegetable Casserole (Small Portion)

Snacks:

After dinner - Tea and Cornbread.

I ate a Cinnamon Roll at Lunch which probably wasn’t the healthiest. I regret it now, but it was delicious.

Exercise:

Swimming for Thirty Minutes

Walked Around Campus

Mini Workout After School

Full Workout After Dinner

You’d think for a newly registered dietitian, I’d have this eating healthy thing down pat, but I’m human and it is a struggle for me, just like it is for most people. That being said, I’m committing to making more of an effort for the next month.

Goals:

  • go booze-free for the next 30 days. my liver will thank me, as will my wallet. hopefully it shouldn’t be as difficult as it sounds as i’ll have to be sober throughout nxne anyways and i don’t have too many other shows lined up other than SCENE and i never really drink that day anyways
  • drink more water. this used to be so easy when i was working, i’d fill and re-fill my water bottle hourly and would end up consuming ~ 2L of water and 1.5L of tea just during the work day. it’s been harder since i’ve been off to keep up the habit but i just have to make it part of my routine. i also need to replace my stainless steel water bottle so i have something to carry with me when i go out.
  • cut out junk food/processed sugar hopefully completely. definitely overindulged in desserts over the two week period that included my birthday and graduation. and that needs to stop. allowed cheats to include frozen yogurt and gelato - but only fruit-based ones (no chocolate) and 100% fruit juice freezies, because let’s be honest, it’s hot out, i need some sort of frozen deliciousness. no baking because i just end up having to eat it all and i can’t handle the sugar.
  • have a salad with lunch and/or dinner. with the hot weather here, salads are definitely making more of a comeback in my meals. have cooked vegetables too. also, snack on cut up vegetables and hummus. pretty much, eat more vegetables. i find it so easy to feast on fruit but veggies have always been harder to consume in the appropriate number of servings for me.
  • give up cheese. i’ve actually stopped buying cheese when grocery shopping so that’s helped a lot. really only have parmegiano on pasta which doesn’t count (because i say it doesn’t count) and when eating out, especially at sky blue sky, but i’ll try to pick cheese-free options as much as possible.
  • go wheat-free. this will definitely be the hardest - i love me my bread. but as long as i try to buy gluten-free from the grocery store, it will really only be sky blue sky sandwiches that will be my cheat. i can live with that. might get harder during nxne when i’ll likely eat out more often, but i’ll try my best.
  • i think that’s all. luckily i gave up caffeine 3 years ago, so don’t have to worry about that.

How can I lose inches off my waist…in a day? :O It just happened so that I’m a 28/29 now :)). I used to be 29-31.

Oh well.

i really don’t like girls with majorly skinny legs. Dancers are sexy, Beyonce is sexy, Nicole from the pussy cat dolls is sexy, and they all have thick thighs. Having ‘a gap between your thighs’ shouldn’t be a trend. Being healthy is the way to go.

3 days till my first road race!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I saw the medals and they’re sooo awesome!

It’s not really on my meal plan but it’s not what I intended to cut out when I started my FVP challenge so I don’t see it as a failure. I wanna cut out bread, pasta and sugar mostly for these 28 days but after that cereal I can see just how wheat makes you hungrier than you were before. No wonder I was binge eating.

How Your Meat Eating Can Kill Vegetarians:

“Factory farming produces hundreds of millions of tons of animal poop, millions of gallons of which gets dumped into cesspools that can then leak and infect water used to irrigate crops. That’s how E. coli, an intestinal pathogen found both in cows and humans, can spoil things like cucumbers and spinach.

Maybe you eat meat, and believe that it is no one’s business. Maybe you are a vegan, and prefer to not step on anyone’s toes at the dinner table. But the truth is, people who choose to eat meat from factory farms effect us all. And the effect is negative. This article is a great, although frustrating, read.

Album of the day #11- HEALTH- Get Color

Reasons I love it: HEALTH are something of an acquired taste, with constant noisey electro, buried vocals, frantic drumming and a frankly terrifying Twitter account. The band use a studio album-remix album-studio album release formula and to date have released two remix albums just as good as the original efforts. But Get Color is still their best output to date, jarring pedal screeches and squeals accompanied by thundering percussion and their signature haunting singing, it’s a tough album to get through but when you get past all the noise it’s bloody good.

Favourite Track: Die Slow

Best Lyric: “Our bones won’t grow in the dirt”- We Are Water

The Goal - Day 45 - most likely 189 lbs

Day 22 Progress

Here’s my progress so far!  Ive noticed steady improvement since Day 1 and am really starting to see how close I am to my ultimate goal.  This 45 day jumpstart has been great so far, but it only motivates me to keep it going for the rest of my life.  I have finally found a lifestyle that has created immediate results but with long term health as the ultimate goal.  My energy levels are high and constant.  My motivation, strength, and stamina feel as good as they have ever been.

The “discipline” to keep it up is almost non-existent.  I work out in the morning because it makes me feel better all day.  I eat healthy to fuel my energy and mood.  I almost never have cravings for foods outside of what Im supposed to eat.  If I cheat, its easy to forget about and get right back on track.  Its amazing whats possible when you narrow down your diet and exercise program to the few things that are truly important and beneficial.

Topiramate, better known by Topamax, is a prescription medication used mainly to help with epileptic seizures and migraine headaches.  Topamax gained approval for sale on the US Markets ins 1998, since then it has been a immensely popular drug.  One of the main reasons why Topamax has become so popular is that it works by attempting to avoid the seizures and headaches before they happen rather than simply just relieving the pain the symptoms cause.  Topamax is able to do this by keeping both the chemicals that excite the nervous system under control for migraines and not allowing the nerve cells in the brain to get excited for seizures.

Topamax, like many other prescription drugs, does have its own side effects, these side effects are predominate mainly with pregnant women. Topamax has been known to cause several types of birth defects to unborn children.  One of the most common defects are cleft lips and palates, which are gaps due to the non-fusion of the particular body parts pre-birth.   The increase of the number birth defects linked to Topamax has caused the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to require the makers of the drug to revise warning labels to include possible effects on pregnant women.   The Advisory, dated March 3, 2011, has already by complied to by the makers of Topamax.

For many, however, these updates have already come too late.  Studies shows that the frequency of cleft palate/lip birth defects caused by mothers who have taken Topamax during pregnancy has risen in the recent years.   Also shown in these studies is that babies of mothers still in their first trimester of pregnancy are the most vulnerable to these side effects.   Though these birth defects are treatable, the multiple surgeries required are both costly and painful to the child.

If you believe that your child was born with a cleft palate or lip due to your Topamax in take during pregnancy then you should get the compensation that you deserve.  Though it may be difficult to gain this compensation a good Topamax Lawyer should give you the information and consultation you need to move forward.

So I got about 2.5 hours of sleep. Ugh. I am running on adrenaline and a homemade latte. Just finished cardio and stretching at the gym. I will need to nap, but hope to keep it on the short side.

Since I was up a lot last night, I thought about other things I could do that is being nice to myself and I realized I could pay more attention to my appearance. Because when I think I look good, I feel better about myself as a result?

Also this would help me declutter. You see, I have a ton of beauty samples. I’m on my 9th month as a member of birchbox.com; they send me 4-5 (sometimes more) deluxe-sized (sometimes full size) make-up, skincare, and haircare samples. I pay $10 per month or sometimes use my loyalty points toward my membership as well. While the value of the items more than pays me back, I should use it all, right? Well, I do use everything. But I could use them more often and not just on special occasions. I deserve to look and feel Bice every day. Now where is that eye cream and concealer? I need it pronto.

the verdict? They are amazing. Seriously. Rich & buttery but with no butter or egg.

Plus, gluten-free and dairy-free to boot. Definitely a great way to satisfy a sweet tooth, as they are full of omega-3’s and other healthy fat + protein. They’re still sugary, so not something to mindlessly munch on. But still. Damn good. Even husband likes ‘em.

WIN for the crazy baker in me.

Lunch: Sauteed organic red potatoes, carrots, and kale.

Like this if you’re a nerd for nutrition like me. 0:)

However, this morning I did do Cooper Test.

Cooper Test is a thing we do in soccer - you run as far as you can in 12 minutes.

The pace is set at a insane 7 1/2 laps (my coaches set everything at insane paces so we all have something to push for) but my pace today was 1.489 miles, which equates to about 5 and so freaking close to 6 laps. Like I was RIGHT THERE.

But, I will get it better next time.

I also did 10 hill sprints.

And then I did 90 crunch (30 per set, with legs at 90 degrees) and then bridge (90 all together, 15 per side, per set), and then I had my brother help me with doing a crunch that you are laying on your back, you put your legs out, pull them in and then back up to hit your partner’s (in this case my brother) hands (that are help up to where you have to lift your ass off the ground to touch them) with your feet.

I think that was a terrible job explaining that. Ask if you have any questions.

Also - thank you fitblrs for helping push me this morning, I was going to be lazy and not do anything, but then I saw a post about a non-gym workout (the one I reblogged) and then I was like… “okay. I need to run.” So i did.

I’m beginning to think becoming pregnant is something I need to put a few notches down on my list of important things.

I think working on my health, aka weight, and working to be a better wife to Hubby is just above that.

I feel that this may be a beginning to believing a baby will come when the time is right. I have plenty of time left. I’m only 25…Plenty of people have children in their 30’s and even into their 40’s. Do I want it to happen sooner, rather than later? Yes, of course, but maybe this is God’s way of telling me the time is not right yet.

I’ve been trying to say the Serenity Prayer daily and put God into my life more, too.

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

And they never work out and have the worst diets ever.

Half of these girls don’t eat and the ones that do recommend fruit and water and shit like toast or cookies like once a day.

It’s really sad that people look up to girls who look beautiful rather than feel beautiful.

Shin splints can be a muscular or skeletal injury. If it’s a muscular injury, RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation) as well as taking anti-inflammatory drugs. I posted an answer to a related question about stress fractures pretty recently if you’d care to look for more detail. But basically, you want to take it easy and do low impact exercise, get proper foot gear, and get enough calcium and vitamin D into your diet.

Get well soon!

Well, hello all. It’s been a while, hasn’t it? Well, this not-going-on-the-internet-when-I’m-bored thing has gotten me in loads of trouble. And by trouble, I mean my house is filled with all kinds of “crafts”, not only the physical ones, but the pagan ones. I’m trying to lead a healthier lifestyle now, by not only eating right and doing yoga, but learning and experiencing more spiritually as well. I plan on living a pretty positive life, and also a more eco-friendly one (I LOVE to tell about my new organic cotton shirt and my recycled polyester purse, but I’m not a snob, I swear! :D). Literally, my bedroom floor is littered with pagan books, and my BoS is filled with new goodies! I’m actually sitting right now on my meditation pillow surrounded by marked up books and pieces of parchment artwork and lists, haha. I’ve decided that I might share with you my ideas of having a better lifestyle, and maybe some you can use as well. :D

- Read at least one book every day.

- Meditate daily, either when you get up, before you go to bed, or any time you deem fit.

 - Eat healthy foods in appropriate portions. You might want to have more of, say, a protein than fatty foods at your dinner plate. My own plan for meals is to eat six meals a day. Three (the usual breakfast, lunch, and dinner) are going to be bigger, while the other three are going to be more snack-like. Also, I’d want to eat around the same times every day, so that my stomach is more trained to eat then, rather than when I’m bored.

- Take walks (when weather permits) at least three times a week, or more if you so desire. In our pagan ways, stop sometimes to appreciate a flower, or pick up a stone for your altar. Always remember to ask permission if taking something living. (You might want to carry a small basket, if you’re like me and find MANY things you like :D)

- Don’t watch as much television and don’t go on the internet too much. It is known that we passively watch television, and automatically go into the “alpha” state of our minds. This means that while normal alpha is good, the alpha you get when you watch the telly makes your mind bored, and will make you want to eat more out of boredom than real hunger. Also, we aren’t really doing anything productive, unless we take out a project to do while watching.

- Learn to crochet (or knit, but knitting’s harder, I think). Crochet not only sweaters, but make little toys for your pets. Make little sachets for your herbs, as this adds a LOT of your own power to them. You can also crochet hemp twine, and I’ve had some cool projects with that (a little belt for myself that I painted lightly).

- Turn your arts n’ crafts bug into something pagan. This is a wonderful way to help with your magic! I’ve made wands, homemade clay “tokens”, and even a besom this way! Be inspired by your religion! I’ve also had very good luck with a raven feather I found when I was 12 that I turned into a quill. You can even make herbal inks for it (I’ll include a little guide after this post), and buy some acid-free parchment paper. My cat Luke absolutely loves to be drawn, as I have found out while experimenting with inks, as he constantly purrs and sits still when I do it! :D

- Cook at least one meal (or snack) every day. No, you don’t have to be a world-known chef to do this. Make every day a learning experience! Experiment with new recipes, and familiarize yourself with old ones. Go get ‘em, Kitchen Witch! :D

- Make sure you learn something new every day. This doesn’t have to be a whole lesson in algebra; it can be as small or as big as you like. Maybe you would like to learn about parks near you that you can visit, or where a half-hour walk will take you in your neighborhood. It can be magical, as in how to mix herbs, or it can be mundane, as in how to properly work your lawn mower. Just make sure you DO something!

Yay!

We went shopping, and although all the roommates’ stuff came out to $12 each, i bought another $15 of my own for healthy choices. Tomatoes, lettuce, strawberries, bagels, whole wheat bread, and so on. :)

So I made this salad for dinner! It has a ton of lettuce, half a tomato, fried chicken filet, cheese, onions and italian dressing. :D

don’t watch this.

Anyone ever had this? I tried it for the first time this past week. Mixed it in with my water (that cup  right thurr). It didn’t taste like anything but the little seeds became soft which made for an unpleasant texture. The label suggests using this on salads and other foods. I could see mixing this in with a smoothie.

I will start off with this, since it was my inspiration for making this blog in the first place!

I encourage all to watch it on your spare time. It truly is life changing!

Macrophages attacking a parasitic...

(Daily Mail Reporter) — A disgruntled nudist handed out flyers displaying her naked body at a school after trees bordering her home were chopped down.

Anya Petrovic

Naturist Anya Petrovic was furious at losing her privacy. She claimed that by removing the trees, the school was presenting young children with the opportunity to get a ‘bird’s eye view’ of her sunbathing naked in her backyard.

Ms Petrovic, from Manly Vale, a suburb of northern Sydney, Australia, handed out flyers to parents showing her completely naked except for a black rectangular box covering her privates.

The stunt was met with horror by many of the parents - some of whom with children as young as five at the school.

‘It’s just ridiculous and outrageous to be handing that out,’ a mother told the Sunday Telegraph.

‘There was a little blacked-out section on the lower part but everything up top was visible.

‘To be handing that to parents while you’re with your kids - and then they say: “Mummy, what’s that?” I just threw it away.’

According to Petrovic’s husband, Misaj Tomic, also a nudist, the couple was able to sunbathe nude in almost complete privacy for over a decade while the trees were surrounding their garden.

(Daily Mail Reporter By SUE REID) — Captured in a family video, Harry Hucknall gives a cheeky grin before whizzing off down the street on his new bike. His father, Darren, will never forget the moment — when Harry was seven — and often watches the scene again and again.

10-year-old Harry Hucknall

An inquest was told in April that 10-year-old Harry Hucknall had more drugs in his body than the normal level for adults suffering from the same problems

It is a precious memory of Harry who, one Sunday evening in September last year, kissed his mother Jane and older brother, David, goodnight before going upstairs to his bedroom and locking the door. He then hanged himself with a belt from his bunk bed.

He was ten years old.

His father blames Harry’s death on two ‘mind-altering’ drugs that his son had been prescribed by a psychiatrist to cure his boisterous behaviour and low spirits.

An inquest was told in April that the boy had more drugs in his body than the normal level for adults suffering from the same problems.

Now, a distraught Mr Hucknall is to make a formal complaint to the NHS for prescribing his son Ritalin, a cocaine-like stimulant which, paradoxically, is said to calm down a child, and Prozac, a powerful antidepressant.

‘When I was growing up there were lots of kids like Harry — a bit over-active, a bit naughty, who didn’t always do as they were told. Now they are branded with a complaint called attention deficit hyperactivity disorder,’ says the computer engineer at his semi-detached house on the outskirts of Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria.

‘What is it? What has changed? Is there some weird disease in the air? Harry was just a normal little boy. But because we live in 2011 he, and many other kids, are on tablets.

‘It seems nearly every child has suddenly developed this ADHD. What a load of nonsense. It’s an easy get-out for parents and schools who can’t control children.’

Mr Hucknall is obviously grieving for Harry, and his words are spoken with anger. But they are close to the truth. Earlier this year, this paper revealed that 661,000 prescriptions are dished out annually in Britain to treat childhood ADHD — double the figure of five years ago.

These medicines are being given to very young children — one aged just 15 months, according to our investigations — despite official guidelines from the manufacturer and the fact that the UK’s National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) prohibits their use for those under six.

Last week, educational psychologist David Traxson told me he suspects that in the West Midlands at least 100 three, four and five-year-olds are on Ritalin or similar drugs. If this is replicated around the country — as is likely — the number will run into thousands.

‘These young children are taking powerful, potentially addictive drugs and no one knows what will happen to their brains in the future,’ he warned.

The Association of Educational Psychologists last week demanded a national review into the use of Ritalin and similar drugs on children.

General Secretary Kate Fallon said: ‘The danger is that we rely on this “quick fix” for children with conditions such as ADHD, which frequently means a prescription for Ritalin.

‘No one’s certain what it will do to children’s brains’

‘We have significant concerns that the neurological impact of these drugs on the developing brains of children has not been fully researched. The potential damage they could cause needs further investigation.’

The psychologists’ call was backed by the National Union of Teachers, whose members have to cope with the huge rise in pupils being dosed with ADHD drugs — which act on the central nervous system to change a child’s behavior.

In some state primary classrooms, one in ten pupils is on Ritalin pills, which have to be handed out by teachers at lunch or break times. In one junior school of 389 children in the South-East, no fewer than 80 pupils — more than 20 per cent — are on the medication.

It is a phenomenon across Britain, affecting families in every income bracket. The area with the highest proportion of children receiving the drug is the Wirral, a wealthy part of Cheshire which is home to millionaire footballers and business executives.

Meanwhile, skeptics question the very existence of ADHD as an illness. There is no recognized test for it. A diagnosis is made by a psychiatrist or pediatrician merely by watching a child’s behavior.

Some of the doubters argue the condition is really a politically correct creation, conjured up by the medical world for a child who finds it difficult to sit still or concentrate thanks to a combination of a fast-food diet, late nights and lack of exercise.

On the Ellen show, Sheryl Crow said that this is what caused her breast cancer.
It has been identified as the most common cause of the high levels of dioxin in breast cancer tissue..

Sheryl Crow’s oncologist told her: women should not drink bottled water that has been left in a car.
The heat reacts with the chemicals in the plastic of the bottle which releases dioxin into the water. Dioxin is a toxin increasingly found in breast cancer tissue.
So please be careful and do not drink bottled water that has been left in a car.

Pass this on to all the women in your life. This information is the kind we need to know that just might save us!
Use a stainless steel canteen or a glass bottle instead of plastic!

LET EVERYONE WHO HAS A WIFE / GIRLFRIEND / DAUGHTER KNOW PLEASE!

This information is also being circulated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center …
No plastic containers in microwaves.
No plastic water bottles in freezers.
No plastic wrap in microwaves.

Dioxin chemical causes cancer, especially breast cancer.
Dioxins are highly poisonous to cells in our bodies.
Don’t freeze plastic bottles with water in them as this releases dioxins from the plastic.
Recently the Wellness Program Manager at Castle Hospital , was on a TV program to explain this health hazard.

He talked about dioxins and how bad they are for us. He said that we should not be heating food in the microwave using plastic containers…..
This especially applies to foods that contain fat.

He said that the combination of fat, high heat and plastic releases dioxin into the food.

Instead, he recommends using glass, such as Pyrex or ceramiccontainers for heating food.. You get the same result, but without the dioxin..
So, such things as TV dinners, instant soups, etc., should be removed from their containers and heated in something else.

Paper isn’t bad but you don’t know what is in the paper. It’s safer to use tempered glass, such as Pyrex, etc.

He reminded us that a while ago some of the fast food restaurants moved away from the styrene foam containers to paper. The dioxin problem is one of the reasons….

Also, he pointed out that plastic wrap, such as Cling film, is just as dangerous when placed over foods to be cooked in the microwave.
As the food is nuked, the high heat causes poisonous toxins to actually melt out of the plastic wrap and drip into the food.
Cover food with a paper towel instead.

Posting because I know many people have done one of many things stated in the email-turned-post. Although I’m not sure about the freezing of water releasing the chemicals, just follow the manufacturer’s recommnedation when using any plastic products.

Want To Know What To Eat To Lose Weight Fast?

Sometimes I realize that I’ve eaten so poorly at the end of the day and it scares me so much. What if my health slowly slips away because I don’t know how to eat properly? Because that’s what it is - I don’t know how. I don’t know what I should be eating and I don’t know how to make it. I don’t know how to find the motivation to make something and I feel appalled at the idea of eating another bowl of mac and cheese.

I’ve eaten so little since I’ve been home because I feel so powerless over my food. What’s in the fridge has very little to do with me beyond requests I may make and dinner is not my plan. I know I didn’t take the initiative at the apartment to eat properly, but I still did better than I am now because I felt more responsible for my food than I do here. I open the fridge and see nothing that interests me, so I just close it and sit back down.

I know that somewhere there’s a book or website that can help me, but I don’t know how to find it. I need new and exciting suggestions for food that go step-by-step and ease me into the concept of cooking. Lunch is my enemy, because I hate the standard sandwich, hot dog or mac and cheese. But what the fuck else is there to eat for lunch?

After a talk with the wife, more research and a documentary later I have decided to try going partly raw vegan for a month and see how it goes.

I’m not surprised. I’m still at the same weight as last week. Better than a gain I suppose. Going to mix things up this week with circuit training and more cardio and endurance stuff rather than strength.

Last week I talked about starting Chalene Johnson’s “Turbo Fire” workout. The picture below speaks for itself. I haven’t sweat this much (including my pony tail!), and needed to stretch as long as I did post workout in a long time! Although it was my first class, I used the hand weights to kick it up a notch. Holy crud, it was intense! The moves were confusing at first, I even had to rewind a few times to make sure I got it down, but once the music starts going, and you get into the groove, it gets a lot easier. I’m looking forward to tomorrows class!

I don’t plan on posting everyday. I only wanted to post my first thoughts on the workout and hopefully will be able to post my progress at the end of every week.

AND HELLO TO ALL MY NEW FOLLOWERS! ? ? ?

Really good day yesterday Was cramming for a psych exam and struggled to beat boredom eating! Really sore knees though, think I should give the running a miss today until they’re better.

I stumbled across the most awesome thing the other day.  PBS has episodes of Julia Child’s The French Chef!  What better than to watch her cooking Indian food??  My two favorite culinary themes (Julia Child and Indian food).  Since I am taking a Punjabi cooking class this week, I relished in Julia’s attempts to try her hand at Indian cooking.  Her usual kitchen antics of sticking her fingers in boiling water, dropping things, and asking hilarious questions continued throughout the 30 minute show.  ”Now do they use chopsticks in India?”  ”No, we like to eat with our hands and savor the experience of eating our meals.”  ”Oh, how…..interesting” I love her!

I found some great trails to start running around town.  My goal is to be running a few times each week.  It was a gorgeous way to spend a Saturday afternoon.  The air was crisp and clean, and the trees and plants had this refreshing smell to them.  It honestly reminded me of a summer in Bavaria (without the beer and bratwurst!)  While my stamina certainly left something to be desired, I hope with practice it will improve.  I need to remember to just leave some shorts and running shoes in my car.  If I have to drive home from work to get my things to exercise, I will not be motivated to go back out!  I also must remember to watch for bikes; as was the case in Munich when I was there a few summers ago, I nearly got taken out by a group of over eager bike enthusiasts.  They are so hardcore.

I got home all rejuvenated from my run, so I decided to cook a batch of Greek style spinach with brown rice.  The recipe is pretty standard, so I will attach a link here ( http://greekfood.about.com/od/spinachrecipes/r/Spinach-And-Rice-Pilaf-Spanakorizo.htm ).  In the spirit of being healthy, however, I substituted brown rice.  The only change is the cooking time increases just a smidgen, but otherwise the recipe is still just as good and the change is not at all noticeable.  I like this dish because it is rather healthy, it stays for quite a few days in the refrigerator, and you can make a huge batch to last you through the week.  Also, in my opinion, it is just as good cold as it is hot!  I would add some feta on top as well, but again, in the interest of cutting calories I left it out.

Not pictured are the two perfectly hardboiled eggs that I made with this!  I used the method that Ina Garten recommends: Start off with cold water, add your eggs, bring up to a boil for 2 minutes, turn off the heat and let stand for about 5-7 minutes.  The Barefoot Contessa knows best!

Smokers

Recently, my boss bought me insurance and I have to say, this is pretty awesome. I haven’t had insurance in over 10 years. I had a bicycle accident several years ago and when it was all said and done I paid somewhere between $3,000-$5,000 and that’s after I decided to skip out of physical therapy which was costing me $300 a session. What was the damage? Three stitches in my head and a broken collar bone. For those that have not had a broken collar bone, they can’t actually do much about it. They just line up the bone and give you a canvass sling to help keep it in place so that hopefully it’ll heal properly. My bone was lined up already so they just gave me a sling. I wonder what I would have paid with insurance.

Yesterday I got my adderall (for ADHD). Usually I pay somewhere from $85-$100 for this. It’s expensive stuff and that’s generic! I thought that it would be half the price with insurance but nope. I paid $15. If I had gotten it on campus it would have been cheaper. Is this what the real people in this country pay? The people that don’t “choose” to be poor? No wonder they think everything is fine and don’t want to change the system. It is! It’s fine for them. So what if over 50 million people in America don’t have that privilege.

Because The Belly Project isn’t about being proana/antiana. It’s not about being fit. It’s about the path to finding health and peace with the way you look.

This path takes me all over the map. There is no rhyme or reason to this blog. It’s not strictly ana and it’s not strictly health or fitness. It is about my struggle to be healthy. And I open my heart to anyone going through the same struggle.

Health-related challenges, if you will. I had a whole list of them earlier this year, but sadly fell off the wagon one challenge at a time. So now they return!

Current challenge: Caffeine Free.

I was caffeine free on my earlier run of challenges for about two months. Then, of course, finals rolled around, and then I was drinking coffee and Diet Dr. Pepper like there was no tomorrow. And I continued through last week, as I was volunteering at a camp and only got three hours of sleep a night. But as of Monday, I am caffeine free once again. It hasn’t been as bad this time around. Hopefully it will remain easy!

Additional challenge: Lack of red meat

I eat hamburgers. A lot of hamburgers. I really like hamburgers. And that’s really the only red meat I eat, besides the occasional ground beef in stuff and a steak every now and then. So, I’m challenging myself to give up red meat for at least a week or two, COMPLETELY, then I can see how I feel. Really, since I mostly eat burgers when I eat red meat, it can only be good for me. I’m not going veggie, as I still eat oodles of turkey. Turrrrkey. nom nom nom.Anyways. I started today on the red meat (and turned down a free lunch because of it) so we shall see.

So, those are my challenges for this week/the next two weeks. I meet with a trainer on Friday, so then we’ll see what my workout challenges will be! I mainly just want to get in good running shape so I can be on the World Cup team when Quidditch (yes, Quidditch) rolls around this fall!

got prescribed double the medication this time.

Male contraceptive pill:

I’ve Embarassing Bodies on in the background, and they’re discussing the male contraceptive pill. It’s been on the cards for years, but this is the first time I’ve actually heard of it. They just posed the question, given that women have been taking responsibility for this contraception, is it really necessary for men to as well? I cannot believe they actually even need to ask this question! Why should it just be the woman? And men should already be taking responsibility by using condoms! There’s a discussion about STIs and how only condoms can stop them, which I think is absolutely correct for people with multiple sexual partners, but I don’t see why a man and woman in a long-term relationship who have both been checked could skip condoms and both take the pill to avoid getting pregnant if they’re not ready. Everyone knows that neither condoms nor the female contraceptive options are 100% effective, and I think it’s safe to assume this won’t be either, so I think covering all your bases if you don’t want to be pregnant, or make someone pregnant is a good idea. They also did a poll which said seventy-odd percent of men would take it, but only 43% of women would trust him to take it every day. I honestly don’t think there is any genuine difference in the ability between a man and a woman to remember to take a pill every day. I got pregnant because I forgot mine, and so do many other women, and the same could happen with a man. I don’t understand why nobody on this program seemed to simply say that it is both a man and a woman’s responsibility to protect against unwanted pregnancies!

Oh, and I’ve also just discovered yet ANOTHER symptom of inflammatory bowel disease that I’ve been experiencing for months. Why will these goddamn people just give me the goddamn colonoscopy so I can get a goddamn diagnosis?! Argh! Making angry phone calls tomorrow for sure!

It’s back. With a vengeance.

That, or I’m just winking and quietly grunting at you repeatedly because I think you’re cute.

Either one. Up to you.
