Duke Researchers Explore Stem Cell Treatment for Children With Cerebral Palsy

You can make your run easier by breathing correctly! Use the ratio 3:2 for jogging. This means inhaling for 3 steps and exhaling for 2- this regulates the amount of oxygen in your blood which further enables your muscles. For a quicker running pace, use the ratio 2:1 inhale/exhale. :)

Sharon Begley breaks down whether cell phones really present a cancer risk, following the new WHO report:

The suggestive but ambiguous, even contradictory, evidence that cell phones increase the risk of brain cancer is why the IARC panel put cell phones in the “possibly” category when it comes to cancer risks, a category that also includes pickled vegetables, coffee, DDT, the flame retardant PBB, moth balls, dioxin, and saccharin—in other words, an eclectic collection of hundreds of natural and manmade agents that evoke public reactions from “keep that away from me!” to “oh, come on.”

But how much do we need to worry about this considering our cell talk peaked in 2007 and talk time has been declining since then?

“To be stupid, selfish, and have good health are three requirements for happiness, though if stupidity is lacking, all is lost.”

- Gustave Flaubert (1821-1880)

30 Day Weight Loss Challenge, Day 2

I’m going for a walk instead of run today.

Only two miles, too.

I wish summer would come so that I can have loads of time to burn calories.

“Keeping your body healthy is an expression of gratitude to the whole cosmos - the trees, the...

I had one today.  It was amazing.  I just realized a few things:

  1. Obviously I can’t control everything in life.
What I mean is: I can’t control that my parents have financial problems.  Technically, they don’t have money problems.  I was not, however, aware that there is a difference.  There is, though.  My parents have money.  It’s locked up in CDs right now, though, and they are unable to use it.  They have a lot of money they can’t touch until August of this year.  I can’t control this.  I, however, can control what I use of theirs.  For instance: electricity, water, food, beverage, etc.  I can control all of these and put myself on a $20 budget for food and drink.  I can control the 20 minute shower I take, or for how long I let the water run.  I can control what I leave plugged in or what light I leave on.
  2. Stress management is key in my life.
I can’t stress over every single, tiny, little thing.  That is so not healthy.  I’m really bad about it, though.  I need to learn to be logical and just not freak out before I know I have to.  And, even then, you never really should freak out about something.  For instance: food and exercise.  I always beat myself up so much for not walking that extra minute or mile.  I always beat myself up if I don’t workout.  I guilt myself out of eating what I really want which will only hurt me in the long run.  If I eat something that I think I shouldn’t have, then I stress about it.  Stress actually causes weight gain.  I need to learn how to manage it.  Ideas anyone??
  3. Food is food, calories are calories, working out is good, and water is key.
Some of you do not agree with me.  That’s fine.  I have my own mottos.  I don’t always have the patience to let the tea heat up, and I have found no alternatives to hot tea.  I’ve heard that the instant powder tea is bad for you so I don’t drink it.  Instead I opt for water with a little lemon in it.  Food, no matter what, is food.  If I’m craving something, okay.  Well, I’m probably going to have a little of that something and get over it.  I can’t feel bad about going over my calorie count anymore.  I’m eating healthier, exercising a lot more, drinking a lot of water, and I’m good.  I’m happy.  Some days I hit the slump of, ‘why do I bother.’ But I pretty quickly get over it.
  4. Moderation is your best friend.
I come from a binging type of ordeal.  I’d deprive myself so much that I’d eventually just cave and eat a shit ton of whatever I wasn’t allowing myself.  Bad.  This is so bad.  I think what a lot of people who take the weight-loss ‘plunge’ (if you will) forget is you can’t cut yourself off completely.  I have so many vices.  For instance: I absolutely LOVE pasta.  I eat it at least once a month.  It doesn’t matter when, I just do.  I love ranch potato chips (not a good example since I gave them up ‘cold turkey’ and never looked back).  It’s OKAY to treat yourself guys!  In fact, most people encourage you to!  Just keep it light.  Usually once you have a tiny amount of whatever you’re craving, you’re good to go.
  5. Live freely.
You cannot spend your life counting calories, staring at the numbers on the scale, or wasting away.  I haven’t gotten to the point in my life where I don’t count calories anymore.  I haven’t gotten to the point in my life where I don’t weigh myself anymore.  I still fret over small things.  I realize, though, that I don’t always want to be this person.  I gave up drinking because it’s a lot of extra calories.  I won’t always not drink.  I will some day learn to incorporate it into my diet (hopefully by my 21st birthday).  I want to be able to incorporate it in at least 2-4 days a month and be okay with that.  i want to know I’m okay drinking a six pack of light beer.  I won’t let somebody tell me that isn’t okay.  I enjoy drinking.  I aspire to be the girl who can go to the gym, not count calories, and live a somewhat guilt-free, stress-free life.

While I haven’t found cures for all of these things, I’m working on it.  That’s really all I can do.  I still have my days where I’m a complete jerk to myself.  I’m going to slowly ease myself from this attitude, though.

ways to de-bloat with simple food swapping:

it’s basically a give & take. a lot of the foods mention are what i have to eat because i’m anemic & need all the iron-based foods i can get. but you can always go around it, i believe. eitherway, the best way to de-bloat, diet, & maintain a healthy body is to drink lots & lots of water!

I FEEL GREAT!

My diet was decent today:

  • Fiber bar in the morning
  • Pizza roll for lunch (horrible.. I know)
  • Apple for a snack
  • Small portion of wheat noodles and Alfredo
  • A ton of water

Now I am going to make something small for my post workout meal.

Today was my first day of the biggest loser.

At the first station, we walked up and down a hill ten times. Then we ran around it, when the whistle blew, we ran up it, down it, and then around it again. Then we ran up and down it five more times.

At the second station, we went around a track and each light post had a different exercise (sit ups, push ups, squats, lunges, etc.)

Then at the final station, we sprinted to a fence, jogged back, did twenty push ups and sit ups and repeated four times. Then we stepped up on a bench, fifteen on each leg. And then worked with weights.

I am tired… But feel GOOOOOOD.

How tall are you? Do you like your height?

On my state ID, it says 5’5” and when I get my drivers’ license, it will say 5’4” because that’s what it says on my permit.

In reality, I’m 5 fee, 4 and a half inches. Have been for a while, so I better get used to it!

I wish I was taller because that way maybe I would be a little thinner, but I also love being able to feel tall when I wear heels.

SUCH AN ACCOMPLISHMENT AND AFTERWARDS THINK I’M GOING TO PUSH MYSELF AGAIN NEXT TIME, I CAN DO THIS

1. Change your thoughts: choose to think positively and practice meditation

2. Get a rocking healthy body: eat awesome whole organic foods and exercise

3. Repeat 1 & 2!

Lunch: Sauteed organic red potatoes, carrots, and kale.

Like this if you’re a nerd for nutrition like me. 0:)

However, this morning I did do Cooper Test.

Cooper Test is a thing we do in soccer - you run as far as you can in 12 minutes.

The pace is set at a insane 7 1/2 laps (my coaches set everything at insane paces so we all have something to push for) but my pace today was 1.489 miles, which equates to about 5 and so freaking close to 6 laps. Like I was RIGHT THERE.

But, I will get it better next time.

I also did 10 hill sprints.

And then I did 90 crunch (30 per set, with legs at 90 degrees) and then bridge (90 all together, 15 per side, per set), and then I had my brother help me with doing a crunch that you are laying on your back, you put your legs out, pull them in and then back up to hit your partner’s (in this case my brother) hands (that are help up to where you have to lift your ass off the ground to touch them) with your feet.

I think that was a terrible job explaining that. Ask if you have any questions.

Also - thank you fitblrs for helping push me this morning, I was going to be lazy and not do anything, but then I saw a post about a non-gym workout (the one I reblogged) and then I was like… “okay. I need to run.” So i did.

woo.

EATING FRUIT BY: Dr. Oz

We all think eating fruit means just buying fruit, cutting it up and popping it into our mouths. It’s not that easy. It’s important to know how and when to eat fruit.

What’s the correct way to eat fruit?

IT MEANS NOT EATING FRUIT AFTER A MEAL!  FRUIT SHOULD BE EATEN ON AN EMPTY STOMACH.

Eating fruit like that plays a major role in detoxifying your system, supplying you with a great deal of energy for weight loss and other life activities.

FRUIT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT FOOD.Let’s say you eat two slices of bread, then a slice of fruit.

The slice of fruit is ready to go straight through the stomach into the intestines, but it’s prevented from doing so.

In the meantime, the whole meal rots and ferments, and turns to acid. The minute the fruit comes into contact with the food in the stomach, and digestive juices, the entire mass of food begins to spoil.
Eat your fruit on an empty stomach, or before your meal! You’ve heard people complain: Every time I eat watermelon I burp, when I eat durian my stomach bloats, when I eat a banana I feel like running to the toilet, etc. This will not happen if you eat the fruit on an empty stomach.

Fruit mixes with the putrefying other food and produces gas. Hence, you bloat!

There’s no such thing as some fruits, like orange and lemon are acidic, because all fruit becomes alkaline in our body, according to Dr. Herbert Shelton who did research on this matter. If you have mastered the correct way of eating fruit, you have the Secret of Beauty, Longevity, Health, Energy, Happiness and normal weight.
When you need to drink fruit juice drink only fresh fruit juice, NOT the concentrated juice from the cans. Don’t drink juice that has been heated. Don’t eat cooked fruit; you don’t get the nutrients at all. You get only the taste. Cooking destroys all of the vitamins.

Eating a whole fruit is better than drinking the juice. If you should drink the juice, drink it mouthful by mouthful slowly, because you must let it mix with your saliva before swallowing it. You can go on a 3-day fruit-fast to cleanse your body. Eat fruit and drink fruit juice for just 3 days, and you will be surprised when your friends say how radiant you look!

KIWI: Tiny but mighty, and a good source of potassium, magnesium, vitamin E and fiber. Its vitamin C content is twice that of an orange!

AN APPLE a day keeps the doctor away? Although an apple has a low vitamin C content, it has antioxidants and flavonoids which enhances the activity of vitamin C, thereby helping to lower the risk of colon cancer, heart attack and stroke.

STRAWBERRY: Protective Fruit. Strawberries have the highest total antioxidant power among major fruits and protect the body from cancer-causing, blood vessel-clogging free radicals.

EATING 2 - 4 ORANGES a day may help keep colds away, lower cholesterol, prevent and dissolve kidney stones, and reduce the risk of colon cancer.

WATERMELON: Coolest thirst quencher. Composed of  92% water, it is also packed with a giant dose of glutathione, which helps boost our immune system. Also a key source of lycopene, the cancer-fighting oxidant. Also found in watermelon: Vitamin C and Potassium.

GUAVA & PAPAYA: Top awards for vitamin C. They are the clear winners for their high vitamin C content. Guava is also rich in fiber, which helps prevent constipation. Papaya is rich in carotene, good for your eyes.

Drinking Cold water after a meal = Cancer! Can you believe this? For those who like to drink cold water, this applies to you. It’s nice to have a cold drink after a meal, however, the cold water will solidify the oily stuff that you’ve just consumed, which slows digestion. Once this ‘sludge’ reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the

intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine. Very soon, this will turn into fats and lead to cancer. It is best to drink hot soup or warm water after a meal.

A serious note about heart attacks.HEART ATTACK PROCEDUREWomen should know that not every heart attack symptom is going to be the left arm hurting. Be aware of intense pain in the jaw. You may never have the first chest pain during the course of a heart attack. Nausea and intense sweating are also common symptoms. Sixty percent of people who have a heart attack while they’re asleep

do not wake up. Pain in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep. Be careful, and be aware. The more we know, the better our chance to survive.

10. Quinoa

Never heard of it? Pronounced KEEN-wah, this whole grain contains 5 grams of fiber and 11 grams of protein per half cup. Cook it as you would any other grain (although some brands require rinsing). Quinoa’s nutty flavor and crunchy-yet-chewy texture are like a cross between whole-wheat couscous and short-grain brown rice.

Try for: At least one half-cup serving (a third of your whole-grain requirements) per day. Try substituting AltiPlano Gold brand instant quinoa hot cereal (160 to 210 calories per packet), in Chai Almond and Spiced Apple Raisin, for oatmeal. Look for it in health-food stores.

I’m beginning to think becoming pregnant is something I need to put a few notches down on my list of important things.

I think working on my health, aka weight, and working to be a better wife to Hubby is just above that.

I feel that this may be a beginning to believing a baby will come when the time is right. I have plenty of time left. I’m only 25…Plenty of people have children in their 30’s and even into their 40’s. Do I want it to happen sooner, rather than later? Yes, of course, but maybe this is God’s way of telling me the time is not right yet.

I’ve been trying to say the Serenity Prayer daily and put God into my life more, too.

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

And they never work out and have the worst diets ever.

I posted an answer to a related question about stress fractures pretty recently if you’d care to look for more detail. But basically, you want to take it easy and do low impact exercise, get proper foot gear, and get enough calcium and vitamin D into your diet.

Get well soon!

Well, hello all. It’s been a while, hasn’t it? Well, this not-going-on-the-internet-when-I’m-bored thing has gotten me in loads of trouble. And by trouble, I mean my house is filled with all kinds of “crafts”, not only the physical ones, but the pagan ones. I’m trying to lead a healthier lifestyle now, by not only eating right and doing yoga, but learning and experiencing more spiritually as well. I plan on living a pretty positive life, and also a more eco-friendly one (I LOVE to tell about my new organic cotton shirt and my recycled polyester purse, but I’m not a snob, I swear! :D). Literally, my bedroom floor is littered with pagan books, and my BoS is filled with new goodies! I’m actually sitting right now on my meditation pillow surrounded by marked up books and pieces of parchment artwork and lists, haha. I’ve decided that I might share with you my ideas of having a better lifestyle, and maybe some you can use as well. :D

- Read at least one book every day.

- Meditate daily, either when you get up, before you go to bed, or any time you deem fit.

 - Eat healthy foods in appropriate portions. You might want to have more of, say, a protein than fatty foods at your dinner plate. My own plan for meals is to eat six meals a day. Three (the usual breakfast, lunch, and dinner) are going to be bigger, while the other three are going to be more snack-like. Also, I’d want to eat around the same times every day, so that my stomach is more trained to eat then, rather than when I’m bored.

- Take walks (when weather permits) at least three times a week, or more if you so desire. In our pagan ways, stop sometimes to appreciate a flower, or pick up a stone for your altar. Always remember to ask permission if taking something living. (You might want to carry a small basket, if you’re like me and find MANY things you like :D)

- Don’t watch as much television and don’t go on the internet too much. It is known that we passively watch television, and automatically go into the “alpha” state of our minds. This means that while normal alpha is good, the alpha you get when you watch the telly makes your mind bored, and will make you want to eat more out of boredom than real hunger. Also, we aren’t really doing anything productive, unless we take out a project to do while watching.

- Learn to crochet (or knit, but knitting’s harder, I think). Crochet not only sweaters, but make little toys for your pets. Make little sachets for your herbs, as this adds a LOT of your own power to them. You can also crochet hemp twine, and I’ve had some cool projects with that (a little belt for myself that I painted lightly).

- Turn your arts n’ crafts bug into something pagan. This is a wonderful way to help with your magic! I’ve made wands, homemade clay “tokens”, and even a besom this way! Be inspired by your religion! I’ve also had very good luck with a raven feather I found when I was 12 that I turned into a quill. You can even make herbal inks for it (I’ll include a little guide after this post), and buy some acid-free parchment paper. My cat Luke absolutely loves to be drawn, as I have found out while experimenting with inks, as he constantly purrs and sits still when I do it! :D

- Cook at least one meal (or snack) every day. No, you don’t have to be a world-known chef to do this. Make every day a learning experience! Experiment with new recipes, and familiarize yourself with old ones. Go get ‘em, Kitchen Witch! :D

- Make sure you learn something new every day. This doesn’t have to be a whole lesson in algebra; it can be as small or as big as you like. Maybe you would like to learn about parks near you that you can visit, or where a half-hour walk will take you in your neighborhood. It can be magical, as in how to mix herbs, or it can be mundane, as in how to properly work your lawn mower. Just make sure you DO something!

This is me at 100 pounds. I don’t take mirror shots often .

Yay!

We went shopping, and although all the roommates’ stuff came out to $12 each, i bought another $15 of my own for healthy choices. Tomatoes, lettuce, strawberries, bagels, whole wheat bread, and so on. :)

So I made this salad for dinner! It has a ton of lettuce, half a tomato, fried chicken filet, cheese, onions and italian dressing. :D

don’t watch this.

Anyone ever had this? I tried it for the first time this past week. Mixed it in with my water (that cup  right thurr). It didn’t taste like anything but the little seeds became soft which made for an unpleasant texture. The label suggests using this on salads and other foods. I could see mixing this in with a smoothie.

I will start off with this, since it was my inspiration for making this blog in the first place!

I encourage all to watch it on your spare time. It truly is life changing!

Todays run was at the doggie beach… Took it all the way down to huntington beach pier down the pier then back… Felt really good… small bouts of dehydration but had a hydration bottle…

What To Eat To Lose Weight Fast...But Safe!:

http://wee.fm/8ja1 Another Great Post What To Eat To Lose Weight Fast…But Safe! by @kingcash thanks for sharing!

i’m going to start off with a few goals every week. they will most likely be small for a while, and relatively easy for most people but will be a challenge for me. so here we go!

6/13-6/19

1. drink four glasses of water a day (try to drink water with breakfast and dinner).

2. only have one mountain dew a day (lunch).

3. exercise three times this week. this can be swimming, pool volleyball, walking the dog, etc.

three, i think, is enough for the first week. :)

Will Eating Whole Grains Help You Live Longer?:

A headline-grabbing study just hit the press, and on the surface, it looks like a home run for team Healthy Whole Grain. This chunk of research – officially titled “Dietary Fiber Intake and Mortality in the NIH-AARP Diet and Health Study” – followed a pool of over half a million adults and found that, across the board, the folks eating the most fiber had lower rates of death from almost every disease. But here’s the kicker: The only fiber that seemed to boost health was the kind from grains. Not veggie fiber. Not fruit fiber. Just grains, grains, grains.

I enjoy going for early afternoon runs (: They make me feel awesome for the rest of the day. I love it.

Here’s the thing. I’m not trying to “diet.” I’m trying to find a balance where I can lose some weight (however slowly) in the short term, and that I can carry with me into the long term so that I can enjoy life, enjoy food, enjoy socializing, and be healthy.

But I feel like I’m stuck in this cycle of climbing on and off some “regiment,” and I can’t seem to get to a place where I don’t feel like I’m over-correcting from one extreme to the other. I want to shake out and land in the middle.

Friday during the day was so good. I was eating right. I felt healthy. I was proud of myself. I had prepared on Thursday night and had good food to choose from. Awesome. I even went to lunch with a friend and had a coffee because I had already had my salad at my desk. Someone give me a friggin medal.

And I went out Friday night, but I sipped my drinks (sip sip sip) and managed to stay within a reasonable points value for a Friday night. And that was fine.

But Saturday morning rolls around, Damon suggests we go to brunch … and while I do order fruit instead of hashbrowns, I also eat more omelet and toast than I really need. And dinner that night — chorizo and eggs — isn’t particularly healthy, in spite of the fact that I tried to stuff as much swiss chard into the eggs as possible.

But I’m still within the right range, and I think I’m going to get up Sunday morning and go to the gym and everything will be ok. But somehow I snooze my way out of a trip to the gym, and then graze on wine and food all day at a BBQ. By the time I got home, I just felt uncomfortably full and unpleasant, and like I had undone all of the previous good.

So now today, I’m like “focus, game face,” but I know that the other extreme isn’t really the solution either.

I’ve lost weight before. I know it’s possible. But I’m really struggling this time. And I don’t know what to do to stop the cycle and get to the balance that I really need.

Any words of wisdom from the universe?

#Men 'Crucially Important' For #WomensHealth. #Women #CervicalCancer

10th June 2011

Men have an important role to play in women’s health, according to Women’s Health Concern (WHC).

Patrick Shervington, chief executive of the organisation, said: “Whether it is an employer, a boss, a work colleague; whether it’s a husband or a partner; a man needs to be very understanding, very caring and very positive about health issues, not just cervical screening, but any health issue that the woman may have.”

Coinciding with Cervical Screening Awareness Week [running from June 6th to 12th], a survey conducted for Jo’s Trust by YouGov found that a lack of flexibility by employers and GPs could be putting women at risk.

Mr Shervington said: “Flexible surgery hours or health centre hours would make a positive difference.”

He added that women who work full-time are perhaps reluctant to have time off because of the money they will lose, so have limited opportunity to get to surgeries.

“If more and more surgeries are open for longer hours, then they can be fitted in. Then de facto, there will be a rise in the take up of screening,” he stated.

My attempts at healthy.

My mom finally took me to the store. (i know, i’m lame because i’m 21 and still don’t have a car). But i got some healthy things i wanted to try.

  • Chobani (i think it’s called? It’s greek yogurt. I didn’t like sheetz version, but i wanted to try somewhere else to see if it was just sheetz)
  • pomegranate juice.
  • Organic green tea and organic chai green tea
  • organic cereal
  • fruit

I wanted to see if i actually liked some of this organic stuff. And i don’t know about the tea, but the cereal cost the same as regular cereal so… i don’t know.

I’m going to clean my room and then do core rhythms. since my wrist still hurts i can’t do jillian micaels. and then i’ll try my juice cause it should be cool by then.

I am on set at work today and I feel great :). Last time we did this show was 4/25 and I was aweful. My skin was terrible and pe

But now I have my face out in the open, I’m making eye contact with people and smiling :). Being friendly and feeling good! Eczema free! The food is a little bad though, I am still in the process of moving and long story short I didn’t get time to pack some raw food for work :(. But they are ordering vegetarian Greek food for me which is better then other stuff, but I hope there isn’t any dairy in it! New celebrity crush, I never thought he was cute but Jason Segel is pretty cute. I’m a sucker for a tall guy! I had lots of itch attacks while moving this morning (and kind of snapped at my boyfriend, oops), but none on set today! Which is so wonderful! I had so many last time I worked this show.

Reason #5 to Lift Weights (Adam Campbell)

5. You’ll Build Stronger Bones
Just like muscle, you lose bone mass as you age, too. This increases the likelihood you’ll one day suffer a debilitating fracture in your hips or vertebrae. That’s even worse than it sounds, since U.K. researchers found that among older women who break a hip during a fall, more than 50 percent will never walk again. In addition, significant bone loss in your spine can result in the dreaded “Dowager’s hump,” a condition that leaves you with a hunchback. The good news: A study in theJournal of Applied Physiology found that 16 weeks of resistance training increased subjects’ hip bone density, and elevated their blood levels of osteocalcin—a marker of bone growth—by 19 percent.

Another bone-related benefit: Researchers in Georgia found that osteoarthritis sufferers who performed leg exercises through a full range of motion three times a week reduced knee pain by up to 58 percent.

What are your favourite healthy snacks?

Put them in my ask! I need to add some more to my diet and I’m getting a bit tired of my dried edamame and usual fruits (watermelon, grapes, cantaloupe). But I want to add healthy calories to my intake, not greasy potato chips or very salty pretzels.

This is a pretty cool app for the iPhone (not sure if it’s on the android system). “Fooducate” is a brilliant app that allows you to scan food and see how healthy it is. It’s quite helpful for finding healthy things in the grocery store or around your house!
